Are there DUers who are only interested in the election and not the rest
of the world and what's going on?

I do see some that stay solely on target with their candidate and don't venture anywhere else; they also haven't been here that long.

Perhaps DU has just encouraged more people to participate, but this is a bit suspect. If not, why not?

5. No, it's not. Some people are only seen on candidate threads, no others.
So you're assuming they care about anything else instead of just caring about their candidate.

7. I think most of the people here see the big picture.

9. Well, I figure you may be right, since you are on here more than me, and it is a bad thought,
that even WE care less for our country than our PRIDE.

10. Come on, nothing to do with our country but with people's agenda.
Some are here for less than my reason, but to support a candidate, and that is all. Pride doesn't enter into it.
Pride will be another topic, because I don't have much. Why should I? What's there to be proud OF?

4. IMO, the election brings out vigorous partisans for particular
candidates, and partisans are rarely holisticly minded - except, of course, the Gore and Kucinich partisans.

11. I haven't had anything to say about Iraq for years
What is there to say?

I read a lot of things at DU with great interest, but seldom post on topics other than politics.

There are many topics I can learn about without having anything to add to the discussion. I read a lot of science stuff here, and world affairs, but seldom post or reply.

13. I don't think you've been here 'for years'. You are one of the ones I
wonder about. You have plenty of opinions, but only about candidates, and why is that? Doesn't the rest of the world and what's going on interest you? I'm not trying to start an argument, just asking why you limit yourself.

15. The world interests me very much
But I don't find DU the place for everything. This place is really lively for politics in real time.

I can read books about science, art and history. I can't read books about this morning's tracking poll.

(I have been here off and on since at least 2002, but I got heart-sick of politics after election day 2004 and left for a long while. When I returned I just re-registered with a new name I liked better, since I had a different email account than before. If you are suspicious of people's motivations that only seem to argue politics, I can assure you that I am a life-long and devoted Dem.)

treat electoral politics like a cheap sports rivalry.

People cling to their candidate, make excuses for his or her mistakes and tout his or her victories ~ just like people do their chosen sports team.

14. I think it makes sense from a strategy viewpoint that candidates'
campaigns would have people get involved in blogs.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if there were people here because they are volunteers or even employed by campaigns. It's not like that would be illegal.

16. I don't think it's a lack of interest in what's going on
rather what's going on is so big and worrisome to tackle, the coming election is just easier, perhaps safer. Also, electing the right person may be perceived as the only way out of this mess.

There are only a couple of months left, everything else will have to wait.

But I've read that the moderators say there are no paid campaign people here.

21. Look back at 4 years ago.
DUers went where the election talk was. GDP was MUCH busier than GD when they were seperated. People are realy into the election at this time. It will pass sometime in 2009.

22. "only" interested?
Gees, George W is president. See him not be is "only" my interest. Sure, I like a couple of candidates, but not for their sakes, but for mine.

Eventually, I'd like to see a Dem fix social security, and make sure the Reps don't get their greedy palms on it. National health care would be nice, an end to the War would be great, some help with keeping jobs at home would be cool. . . but these are selfish pipedreams.

My "only" REALITY-based interest is getting rid of W and Cheney ASAP. Am I being petty?

23. Yes, too many of them! I wish there were a main forum just for

discussing the election and another main forum just for other issues. Right now GD and GDP both get filled up with 2008 election threads.
