Christian Right Threatens to Ditch the GOP If the Nominee Is Like Giuliani
Christian Right Threatens to Ditch the GOP If the Nominee Is Like Giuliani

By Rob Boston, Church and State. Posted November 12, 2007.

James Dobson and Religious Right allies threaten to dump the Republican Party if the presidential nominee fails "family values" test.

Focus on the Family Chairman James C. Dobson emerged from a top-secret, closed-door meeting of the Religious Right in Salt Lake City with some tough talk for the Republican Party: If you nominate a candidate who is pro-choice on abortion, I will walk.

Dobson does not plan to be alone. The New York Times reported Oct. 1 that the FOF head was among a collection of Religious Right leaders who met during a gathering of the Council for National Policy (CNP) Sept. 29. Movement leaders pledged to back a third party if the GOP nominates Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City.

The CNP, an umbrella organization of far-right groups, is normally very secretive about its activities, and talking to the press is strictly verboten. But this time it seemed at least some of the coalition's members were deliberately seeking media attention.

The Times reported that the talk about a third party "emerged from a group that broke away for separate discussions" during the CNP gathering.

"Participants said the smaller group included James C. Dobson of Focus on the Family, who is perhaps its most influential member; Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council; Richard A. Viguerie, the direct-mail pioneer; and dozens of other politically oriented conservative Christians," continued the Times.

The story went on to say, "Almost everyone present at the smaller group's meeting expressed support for a written resolution stating that 'if the Republican Party nominates a pro-abortion candidate we will consider running a third-party candidate,' participants said. The participants said that the group chose the qualified term 'consider' because it had not yet identified an alternative candidate, but that it was largely united in its plans to bolt the party if Mr. Giuliani, the former New York mayor, became the nominee."

1. Can we write letters to Dobson that simply say
"Please, please, PLEASE do this"?

3. Pray for them to succeed
A 3rd Party of the Fundie Nutwing would certainly help to dilute the GOP Coalition.

Lesseee, who could they nominate? How about Rick Sanctomonious the former PA Senator?

10. While Ricky would seem to be an excellent choice I doubt he would draw enough votes to make much

difference. He could help out in places like Pennsylvania by drawing enough wingnut votes to guarantee a Democratic win of the state. But we probably win PA anyway - if we don't we don't win that is for sure. My choice would be someone like Brownback or Huckabee but I doubt either one would do the deed. I suspect Dobson et al are not going to follow through anyway. They may walk away from the Ghoul if he gets nominated but I doubt they will be proactive enough to run someone else as an independent. Just my hunch - I could be wrong.

13. Santorum on the ticket with Guliani would carry PA. Santorum would carry the "T" (the
central part of PA)

14. I don't think so. People not inclined to vote for the Ghoul will not vote for him just because
Ricky is on the ballot. Besides, Ricky is not going to be on the ballot with Guiliani - that just won't happen for too many reasons to be enumerated here. He would be heading an independent ticket in this scenario and would draw votes away from Guiliani in the "T".

27. The Religious Reich is a MASSIVE Voting Block
Don't underestimate the Religious Reich. They march is lockstep with the directives of their evangelical-mega-pastors. If they had not stormed the voting booths in 2004, we would have had a landslide in Congress and the White House.

Now don't get me wrong, they DON'T have enough votes to get ANYBODY elected. But they do have enough votes that if they withdraw them, the GOP will sustain massive, if not total losses.

More than ANY OTHER FACTOR, the Religious Reich has been responsible for the destruction of America that began in 1980 with the election of Ronald Reagan (over an outwardly professing Born Again Christian/Preacher/Sunday-School Teacher!) and culminated in the disastrous elections of 2002 and 2004. (e.g. thru massive infusion of money and infrastructure to right wing; radio, TV, weekly sermons in churches, petitions, private schools, Regents "University" and other Christian "University" grads appointed to Justice Dept, and present as "Ministers for Christ" at all levels of both public and private sectors...and on and on....

Do you think they chose the name Blackwater to poke at the whole "Whitewater" scandal with the Clinton's?

PAT ROBINSON,JERRY FALWELL OR ANY SOUTHERN MINISTER OVER 60 MOST LIKELY WENT TO A CHURCH THAT
WAS SEGREGATED.
so take anything they say with a grain of salt.but count on them being preached to at a young age that unions and colored were evil!
i'm a northern white boy who was stationed in the south in the fifties for a year. I trust no southern minister over 60.
I think their morales have been corrupted.
I refused to go to church ofF base! I HEARD THE HATE THAT WAS PREACHED ! FOR FOUR SUNDAYS IN FOUR DIFFERENT CHURCHES!

23. No, they won't
They won't vote third party, because most third parties are just eccentric people who are out of the loop and appeal only in a few places. They'll die before voting for a Democrat. Evangelicals worship the Republican party. They'll vote for the Republican, and besides, Giuliani probably won't get the nomination anyway.

26. The award for Most Fractured Party goes to...
They appear to be closing in on the Democrats regarding the lead for the Most Fractured Party.

The abandonment of the GOP by the Moral Majority, et. al. is small potatoes compared to the constant and consistent statements on DU to the effect of, "If ____________ is the Democratic nominee, I ain't gonna vote..."
