Where is Hillary and her campaign? |
|
Last night I went to a JFK/RFK memorial dinner. It is an annual event here and is attended by a very diverse group, including elected officials, both current and retired, activists, and leaders of various campaigns and political groups. There were about 30 in attendance.
The guy who organizes the dinner opened up the program by apologizing. He said he had representatives of every presidential campaign agree to come or to send literature EXCEPT Hillary. And sure enough, there were tables manned by Edwards, Obama and Kucinich campaign staffers. The Dodd and Biden campaigns had sent literature. But nothing from Hillary. That of course led to comments from the attendees which can be summed up with "I don't know anyone who supports her. Is anyone here interested in her material?" And the answer from everyone in the room was no.
FYI, Hillary's campaign had been contacted (I checked to make sure) and never gave a commitment about attending the event.
I said that I felt that if her campaign is so sure she is going to be our nominee, then why would they avoid this event? It is a tradition in this community, there is a diverse crowd of conservative, progressive and far left Dems and a great chance to reach many differnt kinds of Democrats from the area. Someone else said yes, they are missing out on a great opportunity to connect with area Democrats.
Last weekend we had our monthly county Democratic breakfast. And once again, all the campaigns were represented EXCEPT Hillary's.
This Saturday, a neighboring county had their monthly Democratic meeting and again, all the campaigns were present EXCEPT Hillary.
I am on the steering committee for 2 local DFA groups. Both groups have already been contacted by ALL the presidential campaigns EXCEPT Hillary's. Since I am the one they contact to hook up with our groups, I am quite sure they have yet to approach either group.
I have been to two mock presidential debates in the past 3 months. Neither one had a Hillary representative. I am not sure why, I can only report that Hillary was not represented in either debate.
So where is she? Is her campaign concentrating on other states with earlier primaries? Missouri has been an important state in most recent presidential elections. Why is Hillary not a presence here in the state's largest city? Those of us who live in Kansas are used to being ignored by the Democratic party. But to ignore Missouri is just bad strategy.
So what's the deal? Is Hillary so confident she is going to win the nomination that she sees no need to get in touch with the base of the party? I can sort of understand not coming to the JFK/RFK dinner but it's nuts that no one from her campaign is attending Democratic party meetings.
Anyone have any ideas?

I really don't get it. How can she be polling so well when she ignores her base?

I said, and let me repeat it; It's immeasurably stupid to claim that Hillary Clinton is just like george bush. I stand by that.
And sorry, my mother's in London, not under my porch. Not that your sad attempt at snark made any sense anyway.

And sorry, I've noticed very little difference between the two. At least in domestic programs. The working class got nothing from the Clinton's, and they received even less from Bushco. Take a look at this: http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Burson-MarstellerThese are the same people. Just my opinion. As "stupid" as you may think it is. Have a nice day. My pick in 08!

17. well that certainly goes to your powers of observation, or more precisely |
|
your abyssmal lack thereof.
If you are so blind as to believe that there's not a hair's breadth of difference between Clinton and bush, you've swallowed way too much of that Counterpunch koolaid. Hard not to be derisive about the replay of 2000's idiot meme that there was no difference between Gore and bush.
But keep repeating that idiocy. It's funny in a sort of some people are incapable of learning from history way.

george bush in a pants suit... Insofar as hillary a no show. this office (COLO. Dem. Party) we have yet to receive any thing from her campaign. so we put up/out what we have from the other campaigns. as we are neutral this time around. (I am a Bidenite) I wonder when they will realize you may get tons of money from the Big guys. but you get elected by the little guys. If ya snooze ya loose.

and realize that both of them have the same big picture agenda. Go look back in 2002 and compare them, they were both beating the same drum beat and wanted a war. They can spin things around but the facts are out there and you are right on this one. Not too many people will say it though, they are afraid of being called names and told they aren't a democrat.

I've volunteered at her campaign headquarters in DC a few times, and they have us calling people everywhere around the country - one day I was calling South Dakota and Alaska to see if people would host house parties there, and they're working on doing some stuff in Virginia this week.

29. At a dinner? Evidently not. It's still early. She appears to be concentrating |
|
her efforts in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, California, and South Carolina (as per her website)and on developing Hillblazers. I assume she will branch out as time passes.
It's still very early and I think she is putting her manpower and money where she thinks it can be best used at the moment.
I don't know how much of the expenses she may be picking up for the travel effort of Hillblazers winternships, or the other efforts of Hillblazers, but I think the effort to involve the campuses directly is a smart use of time and money.

33. I'm sure you know what is normal for your state, but I don't think |
|
her lack of presence reflects anything other than resources being used elsewhere, for the time being. I don't think any of the candidates are taking anyone or anything for granted.
Her website, for as long as I have been following it, has linked to active campaign HQ's in the states I mentioned. Plus they have the new push with the Hillblazers effort, which I am sure is using manpower and money.
I would think that she will expand after Iowa and NH.

This is the kind of cute Corpo-Motivational crap that the Fortune 500 Corporations use to get their employees to work harder for less pay.
However, it is a step up from "Hillary's Jewels". The stench of Aristocracy from that one was truly nauseating, but apparently it appealed to some. I guess thats OK. Some dogs like to roll in shit. Who am I to judge?

if this is the response that she was going to get at that event, why bother to send staffers and materials?

Has her campaign explained why she's been completely absent in your state? How is she polling there? Could it be that she doesn't have anyone there on the ground yet? Goodness knows that Iowa and NH are sucking the lives out of the candidates and their resources!
I live in NJ and I got an email from her campaign inviting me to attend a meeting on the 17th at Rutgers University. I went and they had a nice and enthusiastic group of staffers. They were youngish (20s & 30s) and quite knowledgeable about her position on various issues. We were also shown several videos. The leader said that they had expected 100 people and were pleasantly surprised when 161 signed up. The attendees were quite a mix of ages, from college students to seniors and were more or less equally divided by gender (which surprised me because I expected to see more women than men).It was a 4 hour session and they had catered lunch for us. We were given plenty of materials and the pin which Bill wears all the time on his lapel. I left having met several people from my area and with a renewed enthusiasm for my candidate.

Campaigns have a finite amount of resources. They may have felt those resources could be better invested at some other event. If they had not attended that other event, then those people would be complaining about how she didnt show up for *their* event.
BTW, I havent seen any Obama supporters or any sort of organized effort from Obama here in Brooklyn. I guess he doesn't want any votes from Brooklyn (now doesn't that sound stupid?)

37. Very little organization for Clinton in my area. |
|
Usually there will be folks handing out lit at big events but that's it. Obama has an office in my city and a big group of volunteers. Clinton has very little in the way of grassroots in place here. What's really shocking is that when I compare the number of events that Obama, Edwards, and Richardson (who does pretty well here in AZ) have in a 50 mi. radius in comparison to Clinton. The Clinton campaign site lists the same upcoming house party in December that's been up there for 2 months now. No new events. There are 4 recently posted Obama events, in addition to all the recurring ones (phone banks and canvasses). Edwards and Richardson both have stuff going on all the time. But Clinton? Nothing, really. Maybe there are events and they aren't updating the site, but that wouldn't make sense if they want to attract supporters.

39. The only time I saw an "official" Hillary Clinton table was last spring |
|
The campaign had hired a marketing group that does conventions. They had literature and some merch. All were dressed uniformly in khaki pants and blue Oxford shirts. I didn't check to see if they had on penny loafers. They had no idea on issues and such and were just there to give a fake smile and hand you out fluffy literature that didn't really address anything other than the usual "Top 10 reasons" stuff (she will end the war, etc.)
Edwards, Obama and Kucinich people had their own grassroots tables with actual, authentic supporters...dressed as actual people.
