Does this board have a :roll eyes: smiley? This topic just got locked in the General Discussion forum, anyway..
What would happen if Edwards demolishes Kerry in the upcoming debates, wins more states than expected in the upcoming primaries, Kerry plummets in the polls, and Edwards becomes the clear favorite among democrats, BUT going into the convention, Kerry still technically has more delegets, what kind of pressure would be on him to drop out, would it be expected, what scenario would most likely play out?
I know this is a lot "what if," but I'm still curious what would happen.

Gary Hart won, I believe it was 13 of the last 16 primaries, went into the '84 convention with polls showing he would be much more formidable against Reagan. But, thanks to the super-delegates, Mondale had the delegates necessary for nomination. We know the rest.

11. One of the saddest chapters of my adult life |
|
Had the primary season been a bit longer, the party never would have been able to coronate Mondale as it set out to do. The "where's the beef" line landed a solid glove on Hart, but with some time, it would have been obvious who could whip that disgusting figurehead.
Hart would have made a great President; he still has talents that should be utilized. Sigh.

6. Edwards would be in trouble money-wise since |
|
he took matching funds.
I think he's more electable than Kerry, but the $$ issue makes it problematic.

10. The money only matters up until the convention. |
|
The party can decide whether or not to take matching funds for the GE.
In the scenario of this post, pre-convention money wouldn't really matter.

7. Depends on whether Kerry had the number of delegates required |
|
to win the nomination. If he didn't have enough required it would be a brokered convention. Who would prevail is only a guess.

8. super delegates see to it that the right thing happens |
|
of course its up i the air what the right thing is.
Basically they are there in case the will of the people needs to be overruled.

9. Delegates are only committed to the 1st. ballot. |
|
The super delegates(801) can vote any way they please. The convention would decide on a 2nd or 3rd or....whenever a nominee was decided. At some point Al Sharpton will win and will carry us on to the Whitehouse. He will take Dennis Kucinch as his VP and true progressives will triumph! Because all of the candidates can beat Bush, the Nov. victory is assured!
