(Many do not care for the word "new" associated with this particular poll)

Clinton, Romney top choices among likely Iowa caucus goers in new ISU poll

AMES, Iowa -- With exactly one month to go until the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses, a new Iowa State University Poll of 1,416 registered Iowa voters finds Hillary Clinton leading among likely Democratic caucus attendees, while Mitt Romney has a slim lead over Mike Huckabee among Republican caucus-goers.

Clinton (30.8 percent) is more than six percentage points ahead of John Edwards (24.4 percent) and more than 10 percentage points ahead of Barack Obama (20.2 percent) in the Democratic race. Nearly six percent of Democratic respondents don't know who their top choice will be.

Hillary Clinton30.8%
John Edwards 24.4%
Barack Obama 20.2%
Bill Richardson 11.4%
Joe Biden 3.9%
Dennis Kucinich 1.1%
Christopher Dodd 0.6%
Refused to say 1.6%
Don't Know 5.9%

3. Does It Take Two Weeks To Tabulate The Raw Data?
Did they use an abacus?

5. I think these university polls involve student course work, and are compiled slowly (??)
Edited on Mon Dec-03-07 02:13 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
since they involve teaching going through the process.

I used to gt dental work done at a very good dental school. Excellent work, but s-l-o-w, because every little step had to be checked by instructors.

7. You Have A Point
It's probably a bunch of undergrads doing the calling and a bunch of grad students doing the tabulating...

10. Leaving aside timeliness, your historical input is desired on this:

The AP poll cited isn't the freshest possible data (older than the new DeMoines Register Poll), but the particular datum jumped out at me.

In light of your survey of left-preference performance, can you think of an instance where the winning candidate did not do best among the party rank-and-file?

(It seems to me that candidates with appeal to independents often make a splash in early states, but get ground down in the long-haul as the states get bigger, and come along faster.)

12. A Few Observations
Edited on Mon Dec-03-07 02:25 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
1) It's disappointing the results are a bit old but the Pew results are rather fresh...

2) Pollsters believe the longer you are in the field the more robust your results...

3) But since people's preferences are mutable I like the freshest numbers...

4) Yeah, Indys can vote in NH... That's why McCain cleaned Bush*'s clock there but faltered later in GOP only primaries... That being said, the ability to get Indy votes is a good thing...

6. That is impossible!
The Grand Poobahs of GD-P have said that Hillary's toast.

This is simply another attempt of the "Hillbots" to grasp on to a dying dream.

I must go now and scrape my Hillary sticker off my car and join the mighty stream-roller that is the Obedwards campaign.
