S. 970: Iran Counter-Proliferation Act of 2007.

Clinton..co-sponsor
Obama..co-sponsor
Dodd....co-sponsor
Biden...no thanks!
SEC. 2. FINDINGS. Congress makes the following findings:
(1) For more than 20 years, Iran has pursued a secret nuclear program that is intended to produce a nuclear weapons capability for Iran.

(2) The Government of Iran has consistently misled the United Nations, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the United States as to the objectives and scope of its nuclear activities.

(3) Iran has refused to comply with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1737, adopted on December 23, 2006, which called for the suspension of all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities and is advancing work at its largest nuclear facility.

(4) The International Atomic Energy Agency is unable to verify the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran and its Director-General has stated that Iran could be 6 months to a year away from acquiring the material necessary to make a nuclear weapon.

(5) An Iranian nuclear weapons capability poses a grave threat to the security of the United States and its allies around the world.

(6) It is in the national security interests of the United States to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability.

(7) The United States should use all political, economic, and diplomatic tools at its disposal to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability.

(8) Nothing in this Act should be construed as giving the President the authority to use military force against Iran.

1. Correct. Biden is the guy who has been standing out on Iran
Edited on Mon Dec-03-07 09:55 PM by Tom Rinaldo
Obama, Edwards, Dodd, and Clinton have all made sure they found ways to highlight their tough stands against Iran over the course of the last year.

6. Exactly, the truth comes out and damned if Biden didn't nail it again!
Biden also said the small amount of processed uranium (?) (that stuff nukes are made of), that Iran may have is nothing compared to the issues in Pakistan.

7. Sure did and No. 8 would not be a problem for bush to explain away
After all, the main thrust of the document was to declare a part of a country's military a terrorist organization. He has the power to attack a terrorist organization - well, that is my conclusion on this resolution!?

8. I think this was some other resolution. I have heard Hillary throw it in Obama's face that he voted
for this one. This was to act tough on Iran, but not give the Prez authority to go to war.

It really scares me that all of these candidates are so ignorant on foreign affairs.
Where are they getting their information from?

9. I'm taking a second look. I was leaning Edwards but....
... there seems to be something lacking there.

I had dismissed Biden as terminally afflicted with foot-in-mouth disease... which perhaps he IS. Nonetheless, he produces killer soundbites and exudes a spontaneity ( maybe he thinks that he just doesn't have much to lose; he doesn't)that is a breath of fresh air in the current crop.

Also, as the OP notes, he's got foreign policy sophistication and a degree of savvy.

even if that meant losing. He is not about to compromise and that comes through very clearly.

How is it that the other candidates did not know this?
Obama and Dodd are both on the Senate Foreign Relations committee!

It really scares me how they fell for Bush's rhetoric - again.

17. I like both Biden and Edwards
I think Biden probably would probably be better at getting things done, building consensus and all that. LBJ was the last president that really excelled at that. Both Edwards and Biden are good speakers. Biden leads in "experience." IMO, Biden would be our strongest general election candidate. He is also the candidate who has the most room to pick any VP he wants, like a Gov. Sebelius of Kansas, Obama, Richardson or Gov. Schweitzer of Montana. Obama and Hillary will probably want white males for VP. Both Obama and Edwards will probably need to go for someone who has a lot of perceived experience.

19. The good thing with Joe is...
what you see, is what you get.

My best friends daughter, when she was 5, was standing with me at a gumball machine, and I said something about the color I wanted, and she said; "Aunt Lynne, you get what you get". I laughed so hard, because even a 5 yr old knew that some things are just beyond your control. With this election, we DO have the control, and I suggest we use it.
