The Official Kerry v Edwards with Stephanopoulos & Nader on MTP thread
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 11:58 AM by cryofan
I have been leaning for Edwards over Kerry lately, but this head to head joint interview session has put me back in the Kerry camp. Mainly, I like Kerry wanting to spend more on health care.
I think it is now clear that Edwards is not only a little bit more conservative socially, but also more conservative financially than Kerry. Correct me if I am wrong.

Also, Kerry has spoken more about funding vet health care, and I am a Vet.

However, after listening to Nader on MTP, I am now thinking that maybe it may be more important to work for and vote for Nader. This guy really seems to believe what he is saying, and he is so damn right about 3rd parties being shut out by the Dems and GOP.

2. Here...let me loan you this flame proof suit. I think you will need it.
"However, after listening to Nader on MTP, I am now thinking that maybe it may be more important to work for and vote for Nader."

I don't have a problem with people voting 3rd party, but many here do. As I see it, the Dems (and the Repubs) don't OWN votes.

4. No one's saying "The Dems own votes"
That's a strawman argument.

The point is not that anyone "owns" your vote, or that someone needs to "earn" your vote. If you're voting against the Democrat, you're voting against your best interest, and against the best interest of the country. That's the point.

5. Third parties can only be effective in a parliamentary system, where you
have proportional representation and Parliaments and form coalition governments , where someone with 5 or 10 % of the vote can have tremendous leverage--but we ado not have this form of government.

Nader does not have a chance in hell of being elected, but could conceivably ensure George Bush a win in a close state or two. Nader could be responsible for bringing us four more years of George Bush. Please do not help Nader to make this nightmare come true.

6. OK, but both a left and a right 3rd party could keep the GOP and Dems from
simply bending over for the corporate slavemaster. Is that important?

But having healthy right and left 3rd parties, they would force the Dems and GOP away from the center.

9. Stand united!
I must admit that this is the main reason I am reluctant to vote for Kerry. I voted for Nader in 2000 (Oregon was soundly voting for Gore) and I am a little peeved at Ralph for doing this to us.

It's time to be united as a force. We of the left/middle-left need to see the evil for what it is and vote away the problem. After the election lets then vote for the most liberal congressional candidates. Easier to pass the blame on a crazy congress like Regan did.

11. We as Dems and DUers are reponsible for holding our Reps feet to the fire.
We are responsible for our own democracy. I, nor any other DUers, are ceding that to Ralph Nader. John Kerry often ends his campaign talks reminding voters of what Ben Franklin said when asked if we had a republic or a monarchy--" a republic, if you can keep it."

What the founders did not give us was a parliamentary system where third and fourth parties can play an important role in shaping policy.
