Hillary Reversal on Student Caucusing?
Was Obama correct? (again)

Hillary Reversal on Student Caucusing?

Hillary Clinton's campaign has been going out of its way to trash student participation in the Iowa caucuses. Just a couple days ago, the senator herself said she opposed Barack Obama's efforts to mobilize students to vote where they attend school. Her statement came on the heels of similar words by her communications director.

Well, we now have some good news for people interested in increasing participation in public life: The Clinton campaign has reversed itself. Sort of.

The same communications director who said that students shouldn't be caucusing where they now go to school is now saying that "every student who is eligible to caucus in Iowa should do so and we hope they do." Good for them, but how do they square this with their previous rhetoric -- other than to note that they took heat from a growing youth movement? Here's the good news for the young voters in Iowa. In past years, these sorts of attacks would go unanswered. This year, things are changing. There's an emerging youth political movement that refuses to see young Americans as source of photo ops and volunteering, but as a crowd that should ultimately leave the decisions up to the real adults (you know, the ones who gave us an ill-planned war, massive deficits, a massive housing crisis, etc.).

So when powerful politicians attack youth involvement in politics, they can expect it to become a problem for them, even when those politicians are frontrunners for the youth vote.

1. I liked it better when Hillary's campaign was against students caucusing in Iowa
I think they were actually helping Obama's campaign to convince Iowa students that they should come back to Iowa on January 3rd to take part in the caucuses.

I am sure that most students did not appreciate the Clinton campaign's suggestion that they don't have a right to take part in the caucuses.

By questioning the right of students to take part in the caucuses, the Clinton campaign was almost admitting that most students don't support Hillary.
