GOP Georgian hits campaign trail in S.C. for Obama, a testament to his grassroots red-state appeal

Patrick Jenkins has never voted for a Democrat.

The 27-year-old account executive opposes abortion and embryonic stem cell research, supports the death penalty and is
skeptical of big government programs.

On a recent Saturday, though, he was one of more than 60 people from metro Atlanta who rode for three hours in stuffy,
crowded vans to Columbia. Their mission: to drum up support for the presidential campaign of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama,
one home at a time.

"I don't always agree with Obama on certain issues," Jenkins said. "But, for once, I believe in the candidate."

So far, Obama is the only candidate among the leading Democratic and Republican presidential hopefuls who is tapping the enthusiasm
of Georgia supporters and channeling it into the Palmetto State. Since October, his campaign staff has rounded up volunteers to knock
on doors in South Carolina, a state considered key because its Jan. 26 primary comes 10 days before Super Tuesday... In 1976, Jimmy
Carter's "peanut brigade" — a band of Georgia volunteers — knocked on doors in Iowa and helped send the little-known Georgia
governor to the White House...

Remember Reagan Democrats? Now we're seeing Obama Republicans willing to put aside traditional GOP wedge issue beliefs in favor
of supporting a Democratic candidate who gives them hope for a united America. :-)
