As Obama supporters we need to accept that Donnie McClurkin is a deal-breaker for some of us Dems |
|
Look, I'm not a member of the LGBT community. I don't face the discrimination they do. And sometimes I can be insensitive to that. For that I want to apologize to people I have offended.
I don't mean to excuse Donnie McClurkin's views. I don't mean to say that Obama wasn't wrong to have him perform. I am still supporting Obama, but I respect people who will no longer do so because of Donnie McClurkin.
McClurkin's hate means something to a LGBT person that it could never mean to me, because I am not his target. I think it is wrong to not remember that special meaning, and I have in the past failed to give it the proper consideration.
I am sorry and this thread is meant as an olive branch to LGBT DUers. I hope that if my guy wins you can see it in your hearts to forgive him, though I will understand if you don't.
To peace and Democratic victory.

The McClurkin thing has cost Obama my support in the primary, not the general.
Especially when you put Obama next to someone like Mike Huckabee!

3. Oprah is a deal breaker for some too |
|
When Darrell Jackson, John Matthews, and Linda Short are deal breakers for Hillary, then I'll believe Donnie McClurkin is a real issue.

5. Gosh, I guess all the LGBT people here are just liars, huh? Just big ol' liars. |
|
They're not really outraged that a Democratic candidate would give a microphone to someone who said "gays are killing our children". Your intentional thickness reeks of insincerity and--yes--bigotry.

9. People who voted against gay marriage |
|
and spoke against it on the floor of the SC Senate were given co-chairs of a Democratic candidate campaign. If that's not a problem, neither is Donnie McClurkin. And that's not bigotry, that's just the plain truth of it.

11. There's a big difference between "against gay marriage" and "gays kill children" |
|
All the candidates are against gay marriage. And even if someone connected to your campaign who is outspoken about it, it's a far cry from giving an open-rant platform to someone known to spew hatemongering, inflamatory rhetoric. There's a chasm of difference between "one man/one woman" obstinance and saying that a group of people murder children. And if you can't see that, then you're blinded by something. My guess is bigotry. Or maybe you're just irrationally devoted to your candidate.
Obama's just lucky McClurkin didn't repeat his "gays kill children" crap that night and stuck to "gays are sinful".
And, no, I'm not a Clinton supporter so don't even bother.

13. They don't support banning it in a Constitution |
|
I should have been specific. Having people who spoke against gay marriage on the floor of the senate is most certainly as bad as saying homosexuality kills (spiritually, or through disease, not murder). These people are on her campaign every single day. It doesn't matter if you support Hillary or not. If these people's belief that homosexuals are sinners doesn't bother you, McClurkin shouldn't either.

It's worthwhile to hone arguments or as pure sport, but there is no chance of rational argument succeeding.

You should be one of Obama's advisers, because words like these heal.
I think so much could be corrected if he articulated your main points in your conciliatory style.
I don't think you just typed words....I believe you mean them.
Very impressive.
So.....thanks :)

15. Thank you for this, and as I said to another Obama supporter in an earlier thread |
|
although I don't support Obama in the primary I will of course vote for him if he's the nominee.
However, I sincerely hope that if Obama actually becomes President his supporters will hold his feet to the fire on GLBT issues and not excuse action or inaction that hurts GLBT people.
To peace and Democratic victory, like you said. :toast:

It was a deal-breaker for me, I'm afraid. I'll still take him over Hillary though, and certainly support him if he wins the primary.
The comments from some Obama supporters since the incident have been quite hurtful, so it's good to see ones like this. Thanks again.

20. Thanks darboy, it's appreciated. And yes, it won't hold me from |
|
voting if he wins the primary - hell, we're gay - our role in politics seems to be handing money and votes to candidates who will throw us under the bus for a larger group if they "need" to to get elected.
The simple fact is that none of the top tier candidates support me and my family, they pay lip service.
I watched one of the early debates where each and every one of them said that they would do away with DADT and seriously modify DOMA "once they got elected President". Hell, even in 7th grade civics I learned that it's the House and Senate that introduce legislation to be passed into law - and fortunately, I didn't decide to hold me breath waiting on one of these esteemed ladies or gentlemen to actually act on their speeches. To the best of my knowledge, none of them has introduced one thing to do what they said - even though all but Edwards and Richardson are in a current position to do so.
Your gesture is certainly appreciated. I think the last time I had this much fun at DU was in 2004, right after all us homos lost the election for Kerry.

21. "I'm not a member of the LGBT community." |
|
I'm not LGB or T. I have family and friends who are. And even if I didn't know a single person who was LGB or T, I'd still be on the side of 'gay rights' because gay rights are human rights.
Sign me straight, but not narrow.
