Clinton makes 'change' message work for her: " I believe you get it by working hard for change."

Clinton makes 'change' message work for her

It was subtle. But in a debate format that prevented the candidates from skirmishing directly with each other, Hillary Clinton managed to tersely offer herself as the Democrat best able to effect change -- and scoff at the competing credentials of her two main rivals, Barack Obama and John Edwards.

With the race in Iowa too close to call -- and with Clinton recognizing that the messages of change from Edwards and Obama have resonated among the state's Democrats -- her campaign increasingly has sought to tout her credentials on that front (de-emphasizing the experience angle). And the candidate herself focused on a "change" message in the debate where she was allowed to make an abbreviated campaign statement.

Insisting that "everyone" she's met in Iowa wants change, she said: "Well, everybody on this stage has an idea about how to get change. Some believe you get change by demanding it. Some believe you get it by hoping for it. I believe you get it by working hard for change. That's what I've done my entire life. That's what I will do as president."

The reference to those "demanding" change clearly was to Edwards, who among the party's frontrunners has been the most assertive in attacking the powers that be (a position he hewed to during the forum). The reference to those "hoping" for change, even more obviously, was to Obama, who from the start has run under the banner of "the politics of hope."

Clinton's ability to reposition herself in the "change" debate -- and make the case that she would work the hardest in shaking up the status quo -- should be one of the most crucial dynamics to watch in the waning days of the Iowa campaign.

1. I don't think she can sell it
working for change her entire life? just doesn't resonate when you've got things like her vote on the IWR and her Iran-baiting out there. Not trying to open a debate on that, but it just seems to me she's often been in go-along mode in her Senate career, anyway. She'd have a hard time providing examples of working hard for change. That also suggests a certain couragousness which, again, I don't think she's known for.

3. Good Hillary!!!
I do hope for the good of the country that the nation doesn't start drinking the Kool-Aid and realize that people need to train for a job before they assume that they're entitled to it. This country is in a veritable mess and I don't see how "hoping" these issues away is going to make it any better. I want someone who already has won the respect of the world. Then again, what can one expect from a nation who voted twice for an imbecile like Bush?

11. I'm sorry but this post is total bunk.
I'm really interested in seeing the list of prerequisites for becoming president. Please show me where *any* amount of experience is required. I'll wait.

After that... please show me a link where *anyone* has claimed to be "entitled" to the presidency. Take your time. Once again, I'll wait.

Then, please back up your claim that Hillary (I assume thats who you mean by your avatar) has won the "respect of the world". As I see it, Hillary Clinton doesnt even have the respect of the entire Democratic party. If anyone has the respect of the world... its Biden.

And finally, please provide me with a link that shows *any* former President taking a Presidency Preparedness class. Not a single person running has been President before. NONE of them have any special training... regardless of talking points.

12. Her attitude and personality which was on display for all to see at that debate
will never get traction with voters again.

8. "and scoff"
Edited on Thu Dec-13-07 07:23 PM by calteacherguy
A bit too much scoffing if you ask me.

Scoffing loses elections (especially when the country is loooking for mature, inspired, Presidential leadership), but she can't seem to help herself.

15. working hard for mere change. sounds about right.
I'm afraid that's what Americans will get even worse of if Clinton Corp. gets to run the business of improving corp profits on the backs of the working people around the globe.
