Joe Wilson Rips Obama, Ignites Debate Over Candidates' Experience

December 21, 2007 04:19 PM

Writing on the Huffington Post today, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, who has endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton for president, took one of the hardest swipes to date at Sen. Barack Obama's foreign policy credentials. Pivoting off a Thursday article in the London Times, Wilson argues that Obama's "intuitive grasp" of the world is no match for his lack of travel and "dearth" of international experience.

"Intuition may be a laudable quality among psychics and palm readers," the Ambassador writes, "but for a professional American diplomat like myself, who have spent a career toiling in the vineyards of national security, it has no relevance to serious discussion of foreign policy. In fact, Obama's supposed "intuitive sense" is no different from George W. Bush's 'instincts' and 'gut feeling' describing his own foreign policy decision-making. We have been down this road before."

Wilson's criticism is uniquely sharp and reflects a growing acrimony between the Democratic frontrunners as the primary season nears its end. In the past, Clinton allies have been more inclined to play up their candidate's strengths (noting, often, her experience as first lady), rather than point out the competition's weaknesses.

To be sure, Clinton herself has called Obama's promise to talk with dictators "naïve", and asserted that his childhood in Indonesia did not qualify as a diplomatic credential. In his post, Wilson repeats these critiques, but also takes them a step further, noting, as the London Times did, that as chairman of the Senate European subcommittee, Obama failed to convene a single policy meeting and made only one official visit to London, none to Western Europe.

1. "intuitive sense"+"audacity of hope"=Unelectable candidate
Bush has already shown the country what "hope" and a "prayer" will get us: DIDDLY~SQUAT!!! Enough with the inexperienced candidates...if Obama, the Senator, could not avail himself to vote on important issues he is not equipped to be president.

And Hillary attends Christian Dominionst prayer meetings. Say, how'd Edwards come to co-sponsor IWR? Do you know? :eyes:

3. I like Joe Wilson but wasn't he a Republican before Cheney went after him?
I would guess his politics are hardly progressive if not more right leaning.

He's admitted as much. Joe also admitted that he's a great admirer of Poppy Bush's foreign policy and was an appointed ambassador under Bush I.

Why do these people pretend that there's no actual evidence as to the quality of each candidate's decisions? Do they really think we all will forget so quickly and easily?

10. While Obama knew - as we did - that voting for IWR would be a Bush-enabling blank check...

6. Hillary's "experience" = IWR and Kyl-Lieberman blank checks for Bush preemptive war
Oh, and the NIE proved her wrong on both (only she didn't bother to read the 2002 NIE prior to her voting "aye" on IWR).

I'll take Obama's judgment over Hillary's "experience" anyday -- results matter, not another Clintonian urrogate attack rhetoric.

14. George Tenet was appointed to the CIA by Bill Clinton and he was still there when Val was exposed
So, how does Joe reconcile the fact that both Bill and Hillary supported Tenet when he let Valerie's identity get exposed?

That makes no sense to me whatsoever.

If Joe thinks he can go back and get a job in another Clinton administration, that would be the only motive I could see for him to back Hillary at this late dete.

Maybe Joe hasn't heard about Hillary's vote for the Kyl-Lieberman amendment.
