Repubs against abortion?
From 2000-2006 the Repubs controlled, and actually dominated, all branches of government.

They did not make abortion illegal when they had the chance.

The so-called "family values" crowd is being used.
Why is this so difficult for them to see?

1. They need one more Supreme Court justice to do it.
I wouldn't count on them not doing it when they get the opportunity.

2. Although I don't think most repukes want to kill the
cash and vote cow that anti-abortion people constitute, they really did not have the opportunity to do more than they did. And you might be unaware of it, but repukes have made real damaging inroads to safe and legal abortion over the last 15 years or so. In many states there is no real access.

3. "What's the Matter With Kansas?" talks about the intra-GOP insurgency about this
A lot of Republican activists got sick of asking themselves this very question and started taking over local party apparati, which disturbed the cooler heads in the party who wanted to keep, as you called it, the cash and vote cow.

4. It is Only a Matter of Time Before Roe v Wade is Overturned
The current Court will very likely overturn Roe v. Wade if they get a suitable test case.
One more wingnut on the Court (which WILL happen if the Repiglicons win) and they
will overturn Griswold v. Connecticut and Lawrence v. Texas.

5. They can do it legislatively too... They don't want to
They can limit federal court jurisdiction to rule in abortion cases. That will automatically overturn Roe vs Wade.
It is just they want this issue alive forever as a nice wedge issue.

Imagine how many people are single issue voters on pro-life issue. They will lose their support if it is no longer a federal issue.

Politics at its best.

6. "culture wars" are a way for the ruling elite to distract the rest of us.
Every election since 1973, and every election into the foreseeable future will turn on abortion.

The two parties agree on economics and foreign policy, so they need something to argue over. The "vote for the right-wing dem on account of the SCOTUS!" argument is just another variant of the abortion wars...
