Edwards replies to Obama's attack

by Chaoslillith, Sat Dec 22, 2007 at 02:20:51 PM EST

Hello all,

Obama made an attack on Edwards regarding the 527 commercials running about Edwards. See below..

"I don't just talk the talk, I walk the walk, I've been doing this all my life, and John has not had that same record," he said.

"John yesterday said that he didn't believe in 527s," he said. "We found out today that there's an outside group spending $750,000...and the individual who's running the group used to be John Edwards' campaign manager."

"You can't say yesterday you don't believe in them and today you're having three quarters of a million dollars being spent for you," he said.

Edwards has responded and twisted it rather nicely back on Obama:

Des Moines, Iowa - Today, Senator John Edwards released the following statement in response to attacks from Senator Obama:

"Senator Obama's attacks seem to increase as momentum for our campaign grows. The truth is I am the only candidate in this race who has never taken a dime of PAC or Washington lobbyist money - ever. And, it's why I support public financing of federal elections.

"As for outside groups, unfortunately, you can't control them, but let me make it clear - I think money has corrupted our politics and these groups should not be a part of the political process.

"Of course, if Senator Obama is serious about real change, I hope he and Senator Clinton will finally end their silence and join with me in calling on the Democratic Party to end the influence of Washington lobbyists by once and for all rejecting their money

Remember all, Obama was OK was PAC and lobbyist money until this election, Edwards NEVER took it in any election. Obama also seems to have not minded the Hopefund PAC or using the money from that PAC to help other Dem candidates. Obama needs to pick his battles with more care.

Enjoy all.

Chaos

5. Good for John in answering back.
I'm worn out with the minimal news coverage over Barack's issues (the questionable ones, that is - we seem to hear lots about hope).

6. Anyone who doesn't understand that Edwards could stop it
is either politically untutored or blinded by partisanship. It's called having your cake and eating it too. Everytime I start to warm up to JE, something happens that's a turn off.

16. He called on them to stop running the add on national television. Doing any more than that violates
election law.

It would be "coordination."

9. I don't think anyone has refuted that claim
and by now, if the claim was false, someone would have, I think.

15. How about Gravel?
As far as Edwards goes, I believe he (and Kerry) got money from the ATLA.

12. Addtionally, a reporter from CNN asked Edwards point blank to call on the 527s to stop
running the ads. He did, unequivocably. This was front and center on the very positive piece on Edwards that just ran on CNN today.

14. Oddly enough, if he could order them stopped it would be a violation of election law.
Coordination is coordination.

The 527 theory is that the candidate has no control, so that should apply to stopping an ad as well as starting it.

Yes, Bush used the same dodge vis-a-vis the swiftboaters. It's a good dodge.

The best Edwards can do, publicly, is to call on the "independent" group to knock it off.

And if the group was truly independent, really wanted Edwards elected, and believed that Edwards really wanted them stopped for electoral reasons, they would stop them.

But that ain't gonna happen!

17. Edwards took bundled money from lawyers
A LOT of lawyers. He isn't innocent. Although I do think this is a stupid argument.
