Is David Broder dumb or does he think we are?
Today he again
blames Democrats for the little achievements obtained during this term. Repeating pundits' favorite narrative, he starts off with the meaningless congress' approval stat, which does not separate Democrats from Republicans:
After one year of Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, public approval ratings for Congress have sunk below their level when Republicans were still in control.
Oh yeah? Perhaps because Democrats were nowhere near as willing to obstruct every good measure being debated as do Republicans, who reportedly broke the record of most filibusters in history. He also conveniently ignored the fact that in a
recent Washington Post poll, by a 2-1 margin, Americans blamed Republicans, not Democrats, for congress' lack of achievements.
Broder whines that Democrats are challenging Bush too much on his vetoes:
One would think that this high level of institutional warfare would be of concern to the Democrats. But there is no suggestion in this recital that any adjustment to the nation's priorities may be required. If Pelosi is to be believed, the Democrats will keep challenging the Bush veto strategy for the remaining 12 months of his term -- and leave it up to him to make any compromises.
When Broder finally addresses the fact that Democrats have a much better approval rating than Republicans in congress, he calls this advantage "marginal":
Democrats take some comfort from the fact that their approval ratings in Congress look marginally better than the Republicans'. In the most recent Post poll, Democrats are at 40 percent approval; Republicans, at 32 percent. But more disapprove than approve of both parties.
Are you kidding me? An 8% advantage is HUGE and translates into millions of Americans. If say, John Edwards beats Mike Huckabee in an election by a margin of 8%, consensus will have it that he KICKED HUCK'S BUTT.
While it is true that Democrats have not lived up to expectations, they cannot be compared to Bush and his vetoes and the Republicans and their deliberate obstructionism.
Broder says NOTHING in this piece about Republican obstructionism or the fact that all polls show Americans are willing to give Democrats an even larger majority in '08.
David Broder is a worthless overrated Republican hack.
