Carville worked for Miller when he was still a reasonable Democrat and not the rightwing nutcase he is today.

I believe he and Mary are personal friends with Scooter Libby and that's why they asked for leniency. As strange as it may seem to the naive ones who post here, friendships can and do cross political lines.
