There isn't even a pretense of a two-party system anymore if two warmongering hypocrite corporatists are the best we can do.

1) I believe Indiana has a GOP Governor and you don't want to replace a Dem senator with a Republican. 2) An incumbent Senator like Clinton probably will want to choose somebody other than a Senator. 3) What does she gain from taking somebody from Indiana? When was the last time it's electoral votes went Dem? in the 64 Johnson landslide, prior to that the '36 FDR landslide. Traditionally the role of the running mate has been 1) to deliver his own homestate and 2) be an attack dog and finally 3) do nothing to hurt the ticket. The first is the most important electorally--that was the problem with Kerry's selection of Edwards in '04--he didn't really add enough to the ticket.
I think she will go with either Gen. Wes Clark, from Arkansas, who has endorsed her and is working for her or Gov. Bill Richardson of NM. I think with Clark's Arkansas background (as well as HC connections with the state) they could pick up Arkansas much better than any chance to win Indiana. And NM is a western swing state which Kerry narrowly lost in '04. Richardson would gurantee that state and probably be very helpful in Arizona, Nevada and Colorado as well.

15. There is a possibility that Indiana might go Democrat in 2008 |
|
BUT, it would be difficult for another Democrat to fill Bayh's spot and remain elected. If O'Bannon was still alive and younger he might had been the only one at this time with the possibility.
I personally would not want Bayh as VP or President. Bayh has reached his limit. Just as in business where people are promoted until they are promoted to a position where they are ineffective.

21. I agree. Clark or Richardson, or maybe Vilsack |
|
Most likely Richardson, because of the odds of swinging NM and winning Hispanic votes all over, UNLESS Richardson decides to run for Domenici's seat. Then he's out of consideration. 'Course, Richardson might be waiting to decide on the Senate race to see if he'll be offered the VP job. I hope he doesn't wait too long. He has the best chance of winning that seat for the Democrats.
I think Vilsack could deliver Iowa, which is an important swing state. Other than that, he really doesn't offer much, but that's usually all that's asked of a VP nominee anyway.
I agree Bayh's a possibility, but I don't think he'll be the one. As you say, he needs to stay in the Senate and keep the Repub governor of Indiana from appointing a replacement.
I'm hoping for Clark, but I sort of doubt he'll be the one either because Hillary already has Arkansas in her column. Not many electoral votes there. And while the military vote counts in every state, it's really not all the large, percentage-wise. I'm hoping she realizes how much stronger she'll look with him standing next to her on the podium, but I fear she'll see it just the opposite -- that as a woman, she'll look like she needs the padding and that it'll make her look more dependent. I am encouraged by how she seems to rely on him as a surrogate more than any other. He's spent a lot of time in Iowa and NH; he's back in NH now; and headed to Iowa for the last few days before the caucus. And fwiw, Gert is with him in NH (altho I don't know whether she'll go to Iowa), which is sort of unusual for "just another surrogate."

20. it will be a likable milquetoast from a key state... |
|
First, the VP cannot have an ego, anyone with the slightest hint of ego would not join a Hillary/Bill ticket. Nor would one with an agenda of their own. So that leaves a 'likable milquetoast', preferably from a key state. Second argument for the 'LM' is that it would balance/soften the ticket. Also provide some armor from the frozen mud slinging, if the Repugs attack to hard it will be perceived as an attack on Elmo as well as Hillary. A slight modification to the milquetoast might be someone like Wes Clark, but I think the ego trumps the value, plus no real gain in electoral votes...although it may well be another fucking suthrin. They need a governor who is liked, made modest achievements at home and not to much hair...America is fucking tired of HAIR!!!!
Evan Bayh does not fit the bill, or probably THE Bill either for that matter.
