This Edwards Supporter Congratulates Obama, Candidate of the Century
I supported Edwards in 2004 and 2008. Donated as much as a could both times. But I'm sorry to say that he's toast. As is Clinton.

I've been following and voting in Presidential elections since '68, and Obama is the real deal. My congratulations to Obama supporters at DU, and the Democratic Party.

:patriot:

Don't get me wrong. I think Edwards is terrific and would make an outstanding President. Other than Obama, he's the best candidate the Democrats have put up in 40 years.

But Barack Obama has become a transcendental public figure. Listen to his victory speech tonight. Obama has the charisma and cadences of Martin Luther King, and the enthusiasm of Bobby Kennedy. No one -- not even the best candidate in a generation in John Edwards -- can compete with him.

Barack Obama will win New Hampshire with 40+% of the vote, and will sew up the nomination by Super Tuesday.

And he will win the general election in a landslide if he stays alive. I fear for his safety, and pray to god that any other similarities to '68 never happen.

1. Congrats to Obama but your Edwards statement is just garbage. He is not "toast"

and Obama has far from won. This is not "over ". Wait and see. Especially since two candidates have dropped out and their support is not necessarily going to Barak! John is in to win!

3. I think Obama is a nice guy, I don't think he is qualified.
Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 01:56 AM by wake.up.america
Biden - Obama ticket with Edwards as AG

or

Edwards - Obama

This would give Obama experience and still utilize Edward's legal expertise and passion.

This would suggested by another DUer.

4. Wish you were right, but
please do me a favor. Go over to YouTube, find MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech, RFK from the '68 campaign, and Obama from tonight.

Pretend you are not an Edwards supporter for a moment. Do you see it? Can you feel it? Like I said, with this victory tonight we are now up against history itself, and that my friend is hard to compete against.

And I do hope I'm wrong :dunce:

5. Well, maybe so but I heard both speeches and Edwards and i still am not
that impressed with Barak. I guess I am a poor judge of speechifying but I think Edwards out speaks him and I teach speech and acting/media presentation.I don't "get" Obama. I have heard him in person 3 times and I can never remember what he has talked about!.Now Bill Clinton, I get!And I think John Edwards outshines Obama and is actually better than RFK, who I do remember. Each to his own I guess.

2. I agree with you.
The movement he has inspired has become impossible to stop. I really believe that.

6. Question for you, calteacherguy
As you have apparently followed Obama from the beginning of the campaign, I have to ask whether his cadence, rhythms, and other speech patterns that so closely resembled MLK tonight have always been there?

Or is this a more recent development? Perhaps -- dare I say it -- a deliberate strategy.

Not that it matters. While I like Edwards policy positions and still support him, I have no doubt that Obama will be a great President. All Democrats should be celebrating tonight.

8. I've noticed he has become much more confident
in his cadence, rhythms, and ohter speech patterns. Not that he lacked confidence to begin with.

The similarity has always been there. Whether it is natural or consciously deliberate I do not know. He's got a little of that preacher/inspirational/higher calling thing going that MLK had, for sure (without sounding "preachy").

7. Congrats to Obama
But the race is not over for Edwards....Obama outspent Edwards significantly at the least 5:1. So the ads war won the appeal. Also M$M ia still not counting Edwards in. All Headlines remain Clinton/Obama or Obama/Clinton. I think JRE did well considering it was and will be the battle of his life.

I had to work tonight but I heard the final outcome in Iowa was

Obama 37%
Edwards 30%
Clinton 29%

congradulations to Obama on his victory in Iowa. :)

9. Yes, congratulations to him
I know Edwards has a hard road to hoe, but I don't think any of the top three are toast.

I support Edwards, I will do what is in my power to help him in NH, and if he is still a candidate in my state's primary (Super Tuesday) I will cast my vote for him. But Obama is a second choice that I would happily support in the general if he is nominated.

10. I call bullshit...
If you're an Edwards supporter, you're an Edwards supporter and you would know he's still very much alive in the race. Nice try though.

12. I'm glad you see what millions will see by the time it is all over.....
Barack has shown what he could do; inspire voters to come out.

That's more potent than all of the words that could be spoken; and he does that excellently as well! :hi:

14. Edwards or Obama? Can't really lose with these two guys. I prefer John Edwards,..
Edwards seems to be more in the here and now, whereas Obama paints a broad swath of the future.

18. When I compared their speech......I saw something different from that....
I saw Obama speaking about we the people and how we can change what is broken, and what America could be and should be. He spoke of being the person that could help us find our way, and that he had the wherewithall to get it done (like when he mentioned his work on healthcare in Illinois) solve those issues. He also spent time thanking his many volunteers and recognizing their hard work, noting that he understand what it takes, cause that is where he started (community activism and the vote project). No, he didn't give a policy rundown, but none of them did. He inspired by proposing to lead with the attitude that we are all in this together...and then enumerated as to what the goals we could reach (a better future for our children, a cleaner earth for them, energy efficiency, etc...) based on the attitude that we should adopt as Americans.

In contrast, I saw Edwards speaking about all of the problems that plague America (don't think he mentioned Iraq) giving us a few detailed example (the girl who died, etc...)but only offered meager solutions...saying instead that we would do this, without any other specifics whatsoever.

In other words, each speech was meant to inspire, not to give policy detail.

Barack's was inspirational because it made you understand that the future is now, and that anything is possible when we work together. Edwards' speech for me was much more of a downer....because he focused on the problems for longer than he did in lifting us up as to what the solutions might be.

Barack's speech was more visionary, IMO. Plus, I like Obama's mannerism much more. He appeared more authentic, serious, confident and calm, and in control. With Edwards, it appears that the microphones were as important as the audience....as he kept adjusting them in an odd manicured way.

The fact that Edwards didn't bother to congratulate Obama was not one of his best decision as it only showcase that he hates to lose. And the fact that he actually didn't bother to thank those who worked for him there in Iowa, including Unions was quite surprising.

Anyway....guess that why I'm an Obama supporter, hey?

21. Well, when you get a chance, watch both speeches.....
and you will immediately see and hear exactly what I mean.

It is an important excercise.

I believe after doing this, you will understand what it is about Obama that makes people want to get up and feel that we are capable of just about anything anytime....as long as we understand that it will take work, but that it can be done.

Listen especially on how he defines hope during the last part of his speech. It will put in perspective that all of the talk that others want to do on his "platitudes" is misplaced. A leader is supposed to inspire in order for us to want to get behind him and support him in his battles to make this a better place for us. That's what Obama does....which is why so many came out on a cold January day and did what they knew they had to do to get to that place where we absolutely need to get to.
