EARTH TO ALL OF YOU PEOPLE HERE IN GD/GDP: Primary season not over!
The primary season did not end last night. Yes, for many of us (Biden here) it's the end, but the season is still very much in play. We've seen what people from a mid-west state would like for president, next we'll see what people from a New England state would select.

So congratulations to Barack Obama, someone who I think would make a lovely president, but damnit - HE'S NOT THE NOMINEE!!

No one in our campaign organization feels any differently. We're kicking ass and taking names. Right up until July.

10. I'm not saying all Obama people are acting like it's overwith
but I've seen enough "Hillary is finished" crap to question the sanity of a few Obama supporters

5. No, but it's really shaping up, isn't it?
Couple months ago Clinton had a 29 point lead on Obama, now she's third and nine points behind. Edwards is a distant second but he may have shot his wad. And Obama's going to be really raking in the dough now.

And this is in Iowa, of all places.

I'm not a betting man, but Obama looks like he's wrapping it all up.

7. Hell, I'm hoping Iowa was an indication that this is going all the way to Denver
Sure, Obama eventually pulled out an 8 point lead. But this thing was a dead heat through about half of the Iowa precincts. Obama and his supporters deserve their moment to celebrate, but I don't think this is anywhere near being decided. Nor will it be in New Hampshire.

8. I think you're seeing excitement over a win as something else.
Trust me, as an Obama supporter, I'm still just as concerned of him losing the nomination as I was two days ago.

13. As I said to another Obama supporter
I think most of you feel that this is a tight race, but if I see one more "Hillary is finished"

BTW - Bill Clinton lost Iowa in 1992

14. No problem. I would feel the same way.
BTW, I think the Obama of 2008 is more like the Bill of 1992.

11. It's very important to keep up the race, I think
One of Kerry's faults was that after Iowa, he had very little opposition. This gave the Rove smear machine plenty of time to swift boat him. With the Democratic nomination still up for grabs, it can help in two ways: first, the GOP won't be able to hone their dirty tricks so soon, and second, it makes whoever becomes the eventual nominee tougher because they have defend and define their positions on issues to win the upcoming primaries.

12. It's a long time until the general election.
One primary does not a winner make!!!

You are correct, LynneSin.

Personally, I would like to see Hillary and Obama challenged to come up with specific, detailed planks in their platforms on all issues.

15. I absolutely agree
Yes, confounding many here on DU and elsewhere, Barack Obama did exactly as I predicted a month ago that he would win by 6-8% over Edwards and Hillary would be in third. I saw just how organized it was in iowa the several times I was there and having just gotten back from the crazed Des Moines party last night, I can't say that I was that surprised.

But...it is not over by any stretch of the imagination. Even if Obama wins Hew Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina (he will win all of them by substantial margins), there is still February 5th. That is a deep, vast canyon of possible surprises depending on which way the political winds are blowing then. It will be down to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton at that point with Edwards far behind and the huge amounts of delegates in close races could really change things...

State Del Type
Alabama 60 Primary
Alaska 18 Caucus
Arizona 67 Primary
Arkansas 47 Primary
California 441 Primary
Colorado 71 Caucus
Connecticut 60 Primary
Delaware 23 Primary
Georgia 103 Primary
Idaho 23 Caucus
Illinois 185 Primary
Kansas 41 Caucus
Massachusetts 121 Primary
Minnesota 88 Caucus
Missouri 88 Primary
New Jersey 127 Primary
New Mexico 38 Caucus
New York 281 Primary
North Dakota 21 Caucus
Oklahoma 47 Primary
Tennessee 85 Primary
Utah 29 Primary
Democrats Abroad 11 Primary

Obama could mop it up on most of the states. I know he has strong organizations in all those states or will be mobilized soon enough. You always have to remember that a month is practically political infinity. That day is a month away.

As for me, I'm acting like Obama is 10 points behind. You have to to survive.

18. Sorry - I don't see Obama winning in New Hampshire and definately not South Carolina
I think Clinton will have more appeal to the New England states and Edwards will be a shoo-in for South Carolina.

Super Tuesday will be the decisioning

16. It's a shame...
last night I felt so excited that the enthusiasm expressed in Iowa would be seen as a win for the democratic party, and the competition and excitement would continue...allowing other states to be involved in the process..and the excitement. Now, it seems, that I was wrong...and that it is a firmly entrenched belief that as goes Iowa...so goes the nation. Hard to argue with. I have been deluded before.

22. What LynneSin said!
all this premature "x is done!" "its over for y" for folks who were among the top vote getters in ONE state.

I think the outcome is intriguing, and look forward to the rest of phase one of primary season.
