Reese Witherspoon endorses Hillary..finally a real endorsement! |
http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=244367&command=displayContent&sourceNode=244365&contentPK=19512591&folderPk=112383&pNodeId=188965"Hillary Clinton being a frontrunner is a marked step for women in this country, and one which I talk about with my daughter frequently," she says. "It's an exciting time and an exciting presidential race I think. There's a lot of interesting candidates who could possible change the course of American history." And Reese, whose most recent role was in politically charged film Rendition, hopes that the advance of Hillary could pave the way for more women coming into politics".

8. What red state does Hillary turn blue?? |
Hello. I like Reese too. She was great in WALK THE LINE. I would like to ask you though, what red state does Hillary turn blue? This is an honest question. I would like your honest thoughts. We MUST earn back moderate Independents (who will decide the election by the way) and, yes, MALE voters and some red territory to win the GENERAL election. This is about NATIONAL electability, NOT about gender. Please reply honestly and objectively. Hey, I'd love to have a woman president, and if Hillary is nominated I will work like hell to get her elected. But be fair, it is risky NATIONALLY fo rthis PARTICULAR woman as she is so polarizing in the general election electorate. So again, tell me honestly, what RED state does she turn blue and how does she do it?????

16. Yes, he already is ! Look at the numbers. |
Hell yes, look at the numbers we already have. He won MANY more I's and R's than she did in Iowa and NH. He won MANY more men, which (an I am not being gender-biased here) which we need to win in the general election. In the general, he has a broader coalition. So answer my question specifically please and not with another question. WHAT RED STATE DOES HILLARY TURN BLUE AND HOW??? (Here are red states, red meaning they went for Bush last time, that Obama could win: Nevada, Colorado, Missouri, Ohio, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, and New Mexico to name some.)

29. How does she do it though???? |
Really, but how does she do it???? How does she appeal to I's and moderate who MUST be won to get those states back with her high negatives. To be annecdotal, I know R's and I's myself who say they'd vote Obama, but NEVER, EVER for Hillary. So you tell me. Where and HOW does she get the votes outside the Dem base????? You are NOT answering the question! I'd honestly like someone's strategy ideas, and it has to be more than "Attack Bush" because Bush won't be running. Again, if she's nominated I'll work like hell for her, but please tell me HOW she gets the Indy's and even some cross over moderate R's that we must win back. Be specific please.

You still don't answer the question. We don't need a "survivor", we need a WINNER ! How the hell does she win? I wish someone would actually answer this simple question and be specific please.

38. Florida, Arkansas, Tenessee, Ohio |
These states can all be won by Hillary Clinton by running a strong campaign and letting the rest of America see what NH just did. She will be very strong with women and not just Democratic women. She will be very strong with any voters sick of the last 8 years of Republicans. She has plenty of ammunition.

43. Thanks. Better answer! |
Yes, strong, tough campaign. But remember, is was liberal working and middle class women who won her NH and very NARROWLY, and I must say she did well in the traditional Dem base overall. She is NOT winning enough men and Independents so far in these primaries. She MUST do that. However, if Obama does the same thing, I think he can win and by a bigger margin. Also, I can see Ohio and Florida, but Tennessee and Arkansas will be harder, especially Tennessee.

45. I think judging General election results from a primary contest |
is unreliable, the candidates were running campaigns targeted to specific groups. Hillary's GE campaign would be run a little differently. And the voters who voted Democrat in NH will still go with our party for the most part imho.

33. No, it's a common term and it is REALITY. |
No it's called being REAL. Her national favorability ratings are about 50/50. That's called polarizing, which is a common term to describe this dynamic and NOTHING "right wing", so please lighten up on that. And by the way, you are talking to a die-hard Democrat and local Democratic official here who has burned more shoe leather working to elect Democrats that you could shake a stick at so I know something about these issues. This is objective reality. She runs the highest negatives on favorability that we have ever seen in a first-tier Presidential candidate. Research it. The R's want her to win the nomination so bad they can taste it. This is because it will unite and rally their party to a cause: DEFEATING HILLARY. Again, and please believe this, I LIKE Hillary. She is brilliant, she is capable, she is experienced. She'd be fine as President. The problem is NATIONAL ELECTIBILITY. Do we want her because she is Hillary and because she is a woman, or do we want her because she can actually turn red states blue? Tell me how she wins in the general election by winning more men, more I's, and the red territory we need to get back to win in the general election. These are the electoral realities and the voters we have lost to the R's time and again in the presidential vote which is the most PERSONAL vote.

37. Ohio for sure. Possibly Florida. |
Also Arkansas. Maybe more that I'm not familiar with. Also depends on the Repub. candidate.
Additionally, it has very little to do with gender for me, though of course I think a woman president would be nice.

42. But how??? Here are my ideas. |
Thanks for being at least a little more specific, but you don't say how. Here's my ideas if she is nominated: #1) GO ON OFFENSE! Don't "fight back," fight FORWARD. Beat them to the punch because they are already sharpening the swords. #2) Hang Bush around the R candidate's head for all it's worth. #3) Unite the other candidates and the entire party as soon as possible. #4) Get the right running mate. Evan Bayh, Obama, Edwards again, maybe Wesley Clark, someone who will add the right balance and really help the ticket. #5) Activate the unions and every left leaning organization bigtime. #6) Display toughness and populism at the same time. Also, don't be afraid to talk about centrist positions on guns, god, gays, and abortion. #7) Do what Obama has done and give the country a grand vision narrative for our country, what it means to be American, what it will mean to the world. CAPTURE THE IMAGINATION OF THE COUNTRY. #8) For god sake be genuine and human and keep having beers with ordinary people. Stop being so damn stiff and elitist-sounding (even if it's not intentional) #9) Don't just do a 20 state strategy. GO AFTER THE VOTES IN SOME RED TERRITORY. You can't win if don't show up. #10) Find ways to talk to MEN and INDEPENDENTS!! Convince them she's tough, can lead, will give them something tangible (i.e. middle class tax incentives, tuition help, etc.); #11) ECONOMY ECONOMY ECONOMY. #12) CONVINCE PEOPLE THAT THE R'S MEAN FOUR MORE YEARS OF BUSH OR BUSH LITE AT BEST. Do all these things, find ways to get the comfort level up and the high negatives down, and she'd have a viable shot.

25. Yeah, it didn't read like much of an endorsement to me either. |
Sounded more like a generic statement about a woman being the frontrunner. Which even I would agree is a positive thing in the abstract. it would just be a better thing if that woman were someone like Barbara Boxer. I get the feeling this quote was pre-Iowa as opposed to post New Hampshire, in other words, before Hillary actually won anything.
