Fun Letter to the Editor
from the paper in a rather conservative town where I used to live.

I know really aren't supposed to bash Bush here, not when there's so much work to be done destroying our own candidates, but I did want to pass this one on, because it nails Bush in the kind of folksy, downhome way that can, with some audiences, be way more effective than the usual LTTE style.

An excerpt:

The scene -- the mall food court. Characters -- a bunch of old goats that sit around and tell lies.

I mentioned to one of the compadres at the table that I was about to write a letter to the editor. Told him to look for it in the paper. Politics was gonna be my theme....

I also told my friend I would mention George W. Bush’s alleged insider trading, lies about WMDs, going AWOL from his service commitment, stealing the election with the concurrence of the Supreme Court, his grandiose swagger, his pursed lips. How about the “mission accomplished" banner? Holding and displaying the turkey at the airport in Iraq. The turkey was not real. It was phony. Here we have a phony turkey being held by a real turkey. Et cetera and ad infinitum.

One other observation I will make. How in the name of all that is holy do so many Americans allow themselves to be fooled by the president and his incompetence? A stick of stove wood, please -- real quickly. We’ve got to get their attention.

1. Ha!
When I saw your subject line, I thought to myself "I wonder if he could be talking about the one I read in the paper today?" And you actually were!

Do you read Katherine Lee's column on Fridays? I almost always agree with her. Sadly, she won't answer my emails. :(

2. Haven't seen her lately.
But I love the way she gets the knuckledraggers all stirred up!

I guess my favorite "regular" on the letters page is Carl Hess, that retired Army sergeant out in Ozark who strips the bark off the Republicans a couple of times a month. He's the best!

3. Yeah, Hess is quite good
There's a Bircher that writes in a lot. I think his name is John W. Altman, or something like that. I don't think I've ever agreed with him, but I find him quite entertaining.

I haven't actually counted them up, but it seems to me that there have been at least as many anti-Bush letters in there as pro-Bush ones lately. And this being Alabama, I take that as a very hopeful sign!

4. I agree.
I have seen quite a few anti-Bush letters in the T'loosa and B'ham papers.

I wish there were more--what we need is a coordinated effort to get our talking points into medium-sized and small newspapers all over the country. Most people do read the ltte page.

5. but we're the good guys and we don't do things like that
And I guess that's one of the reasons we're getting steamrolled at every turn. :(

6. Well, there's no need for astroturf,
which I have found in the News and warned the editor about several times. That's sleazy and cheap.

But a letter-writing campaign in which people actually write letters is a whole other thing.

8. I tried to drum up support here,
for a site listing addresses for papers across the country, sources of info to reference in latters, action alerts, etc. and a grand total of three people offered to help out.

Would have been a good idea, though.

11. will do...
But I find I can be quite absent-minded sometimes (and I'm not particularly old), so remind me if I forget. :)
