I think we should seriously question this prosecution. The Justice Dept has been notoriously inept in successfully prosecuting these Islamic charity/terra cases to the point of raising the serious question as to whether the prosecutions are mostly the result of post 9-11 hysteria. The heavy reliance on multiple counts (42 in this case) of money laundering, conspiracy and obstructing justice makes me even more suspicious. Excuse me but it sounds too much like "throw a lot of shit up on the wall and see what sticks" rather than a carefully constructed case based on real evidence of wrongdoing. I attended a social event a few years ago put on by an Islamic cultural group and I often wondered whether an overeager prosecutor could have made something of the fact that I gave a $5 donation for the party by claiming that it went to support a "terra" organization.

3. I don't know the guy but they should not be investigating ANYBODY unless they have "probable cause"
that actual laws were broken.

2. It's hard to say what's going on, but it doesn't pass the smell test.
No doubt, this former politician is into something marginal if not illegal, but laundering money for terrorism? It seems highly unlikeley that this guy did such a thing intentionally.

My guess is that Siljander is linked to somebody that they want, and he refused to squeal. So, they're making a big public display to humiliate him into turning over.

4. Refused to squeal or refused to say what they wanted him to say about someone?
Maybe they should drag out the water board.:sarcasm:

5. I think there is CERTAINLY an element of 9-11 hysteria no matter what....
Anyone who's reported donations to Islamic charities on any sort of financial disclosure should be concerned about being scapegoated, IMO. This shouldn't happen to anyone, no matter what their politics.

7. Hysteria? Not behind the scenes at DOJ
There may be something smelly, but since it's a Reep I doubt if it's hysteria.

8. The people using "hysteria" are themselves likely to be cold and calculating.
That is how I think the Justice Dept uses 9-11 hysteria, not that they themselves are hysterical.

10. More 9/11 wackiness
Of course, people on this board want to believe it because it's a Republican.

People are stupid, gullible, and self-centered, even on DU.
