I did this video about Ronald Reagan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBx5-alXisY

Do I like Ronnie? No.

Do I understand what Obama said when he said the Democrats need a unifying leader like Reagan (not his policies) to start a progressive movement? Yes.

Do I understand why some people and candidates want to misrepresent what Obama was saying about the need for the Democrats to have a unifying leader (not his policies) like Reagan? Um...no.

Enjoy the video.

1. Using Reagan as an example of what we should follow for unification....
... is like using Hitler as an example of how we should handle our country's foreign affairs to build up our pride and self-confidence in this world.

14. I'm wondering what he means by "excesses of the 1960s and 1970s"
It sounds like Republican claptrap---I can only think he may mean spending on welfare and other programs for the poor. Or did he mean those crazy protesters? Or maybe it was those damn hippies smoking pot and making love not war? OR, could it possibly be the excess freedom that women and minorities were being given?

3. But you can't separate out Reagan's electoral success from his policies
Edited on Thu Jan-17-08 05:45 PM by jpgray
Each aided and abetted the other. Corporate corruption, demonization of Jimmy Carter, praise for and appeal to authoritarianism--all these played a major role in making his "hope" and "optimism" campaign a success. It wasn't just "hope" "optimism" in isolation, and pretending it was is rather dishonest.

4. That's great!
Haunting, of course, to be reminded of so many of his evil deeds. What an awful man he was. Eventually, he'll be remembered that way, but for now the white male establishment (and Senator Obama) can continue to protect his name.

16. Yup
I did it in Flash, did the music, did the VO and exported as an MP4 video. I'm not happy with the kerning, but it got the message across. I love how the freeps comment on it...

Here's the original Flash animation with lyrics and an MP3 link:
http://www.awolcowboy.com/reagan/

I did it in 2004 after Reagan died and I was sick and tired of the lovefest....

18. Well...
I have multiple accounts on YouTube. ZZ is just a name here based on a brief lyric from Frank Zappa and my favorite Mardi Gras krewe when I lived in New Orleans. The other name was a nickname given to me by people in a band I was in.

13. Obama is seeing himself as part of a new trajectory
Edited on Thu Jan-17-08 08:07 PM by goodgd_yall
The problem with what he said is his positive spin on why Reagan was elected. "Clarity, optimism...accountability" and earlier he stated people wanted to get away from the "excesses of the 60s and 70s" (what? like an expansion of civil rights for all and war protests? Or does he mean spending money on poor people?). The trajectory was one away from civil rights and away from the poor. During Reagan's years we supported Guatemala as they committed genocide against its native population and we trained rebels to fight against the elected government of Nicaragua. THen we had that stupid war in Grenada, fought under the premise of saving American students who were living there.

Go on, you all, believe the crap that has been dished out about the golden Reagan years. Obama couldn't possibly have committed a faux pas, or could he?

23. Remember Ronnie's famous words??
'I'm from the government and I'm here to help you."

He said they were words of which to beware.

He thought government should play no role in helping the people.
