Hillary Clinton campaigns in Harlem
Fresh from winning Nevada caucuses with the help of Latinos, Hillary Rodham Clinton Sunday resumed her courtship of African-Americans by attending a service honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., at a prominent Harlem church. But the boos that mingled with cheers during her uptown visit underscored the tough battle she faces in wresting black voters from rival Barack Obama.

"You've come to Harlem to steal the black vote!" a small but boisterous group of Obama protesters shouted as Clinton stood outside the Abyssinian Baptist Church to receive the endorsement of its influential pastor, the Rev. Calvin O. Butts.

"Harlem for Obama!" the protesters repeated so loudly that at some points they drowned out Butts' endorsement. When Clinton passed cups of steaming coffee to the crowd on the bitterly cold day, one man shouted, "I don't want your coffee!"

"Hillary! Hillary!" a group of Clinton supporters shouted back.

109. Good for Hillary, welcome to Harlem. Here's Obama's message about MLK.

If you're tired of spin and ready for a message of substance, read a little of this speech by Obama.
It is a message of unity that all of us can learn from.

126. Why can't we all just be "Americans"?
What's with the "african" crap.
Guiliani isn't referred to as "the first Italian-American to run for President" ... blah blah blah
As long as we continue to color-code people, we will never have a colorless society.
Same with Bill Richardson. I mean who the heck cares if his mother was latino?
The whole "race" issue is so silly and obnoxious.
Maybe we should vote by hair-color, ... or eye color.
If I said I choose the blue-eyed candidate ... now how stupid is that!!?
And why do Demo candidates break out in a "black dialect" when they're at black churches?
Like they're some southern baptist ... "preachin'" to da choir".
Frankly, I think this is offensive.
Why don't they talk the way they normally do?
Why put on this "act" to get votes?
It's unnecessary, IMHO.

That point is that the straw poll was a small sample of how some NJ residents feel. I admit it may not represent everyone. But by going to many of the major cities in NJ I do see tons of support for Barack over Clinton. All I'm saying is that people might be shocked on Feb 5 regarding NJ. NJ isn't a lock for Clinton.

And I think that's the way it should be.

Frankly, that's one of the reasons I'm so turned off from the Obama campaign right now...because of the way they've used venues like the Tom Joyner Morning Show, to get those of us in the A-A community to engage in group think.

This bullshit that they are required to vote for a black man over a woman because they are black is just as insulting as someone telling me that I have to vote for Hillary over Obama because I am a woman or Hillary over Edwards because I am a woman.

Again with the BS that women need to somehow be told how they should be voting.

24. And just how, exactly, does she want to "steal" the Black vote? Last time I checked, she wanted to
EARN our votes.

I am an African-American woman, and I'm proudly supporting Sen. Clinton. I've been absolutely disgusted with the way the Obama campaign (with the help of people like Tom Joyner) have tried to pimp those of us in the Black community, and encourage us to engage in group think (i.e. get behind the Black candidate).

For example, when Michelle Obama was asked by a reporter some time ago, why her husband wasn't doing better among Black voters, she said she was convinced that "Black America will wake up and get it." So in other words, those of us in the Black community who do NOT support her husband, don't "get it?"

Then, when Michelle Obama appeared on Tom Joyner's mornin show, he asked her "What is up with Black women?" Meaning, he felt there was something wrong with any Black woman (like me) not supporting Obama.

Then let's talk about Barack Obama's comments on Tavis Smiley's show. Tavis asked Obama about the notion that some people in our community apparently have, that if we would support Obama the way we supported Jesse Jackson when he ran, then Sen. Clinton would have to pack her bags and go home. Obama responded "There's no doubt that if we consolidate the Black vote, this would be a different race."

My friend, Sen. Clinton is not trying to STEAL the Black vote.

And Barack Obama is doing nothing to try to earn it. He's done nothing to elevate the level of conversation in our community. He simply wants us to get behind the Black candidate (him).

76. stealing, tricking, etc...
And then there's this from a 45 year old Harlem Obama supporter who was there this morning:

“For her to come here and try to trick us out of the black vote is a sham,” Mr. Hunt said. “It’s a sad day in Harlem.”

What the hell are these people talking about??? "Steal the black vote"? "Trick us out of the black vote?" WTF?!?!

Looks like they succeeded in "tricking" this one: “As a black person, I’m still not going in this for race,” said Ms. Facey. “Hillary stands for the people.”

17. The Clintons aren't perfect, but at least Hillary acts
appropriately at these events. Obama has a contingency of trouble makers in his midst that he needs to reign in if we are going to have a nonviolent campaign season. That certain bunch of his supporters tend to want to make trouble a bit too much. I sense a tension that is brewing that may cross the line at some point if he doesn't have a talk with some of his supporters.

Clinton has a right to campaign wherever she pleases, and especially when she is invited to receive an endorsement.

You also miss the point that she was campaigning amongst her constituents. She is, after all, the junior senator from NY.

"Hillary Rodham Clinton Sunday resumed her courtship of African-Americans by attending a service honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., at a prominent Harlem church. "
====================================================================================
====================================================================================
My prediction:

This will be the last election where any candidate will have to "court" the black vote.
It will be the latinos who control WHO wins elections.
Obama lost Nevada because of latinos.
Latinos will not vote for blacks.

That's how Hillary won Nevada.

78. I am a black woman and I am voting for Hillary.
I will also vote for a Hispanic, a black man or a woman as long as I think they will do a good job.

For POTUS I am voting for Hillary. I have never considered Obama as a good choice because he does not have a strong national record and he is part of the Daily machine. He comes across as thin skinned. He has not been vetted enough and I do not want him to implode after the nomination. In other words, I do not want to roll the dice. After he has been in the national spotlight a little longer and no skeltons fall out of his closet, I'll probably be his number one supporter.

We as African American are blessed with a strong woman who is a supporter of our issues and a black man courting us for our vote. American is a great place to live. We need to sit back and enjoy the courtship. Why get mad because they both want us. The protester are idiots.

25. "Latinos will not vote for blacks"
I think that is too limiting a statement. The West has largely Mexicans and maybe it's true there. But the East has Latinos from other places, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, some countries in South America, who are frequently black, as well as Latino. It will be interesting to see where that vote ends up, but I wouldn't bank on it necessarily going where you want it to go.

57. Do these idiots think they are HELPING???
"You've come to Harlem to steal the black vote!" a small but boisterous group of Obama protesters shouted ...

Didn't they get that "Politics of Hope" memo?

I will say, though, that Harlem politics are never dull--even the Good Reverend knows how to throw a subtle elbow! It sure make for good copy in the papers:

Butts, in turn, said his endorsement of Clinton had prompted angry phone calls from some parishioners. But, he added to a crowd outside the church, "a vote for Hillary is not a vote against Barack Obama or any community, be it African-American, Latino or any other." Instead, he said, it is a vote for the candidate "who has the vision and experience to make things happen."

But during his service, Butts couldn't resist a dig at Obama. After Clinton addressed parishioners, Butts said slyly: "Uh-huh. No teleprompter there. Isn't that something? A little scrap of paper but that's all." Obama has used a teleprompter in some speeches.

100. No, I remember Rev Cal calling Rudy a racist. And I also remember the Pataki endorsement.
Rev Cal isn't stupid--his endorsements are really based on "What have you done for us lately, or over the LONG haul?"

He doesn't play political parties--he plays community assistance, and political results. He's also rather pragmatic. He'll endorse a Pataki who has provided economic development aid, especially when he KNOWS the guy is a shoo-in for reelection, anyway. I mean, really--that's just a smart move. Jump on the winning train, and all that. And then force the hand of the winner to provide MORE assistance for the community as a thank you.

I know Flake, and I am not conflating the two, really.

133. Here
But as he aged, Mr. Butts said, and after Republicans won control of City Hall and the Governor's mansion, he found himself wanting ''to be able to negotiate rather than have to get out in the street all the time.''

When Mr. Giuliani, as a candidate in 1993, showed up one day to discuss economic development, Mr. Butts said he was charmed.

''I said, 'Let's watch and see what happens,' '' he recalled.

He had split with David Dinkins, a man of class and honor, at the time. That's something I know personally - I don't have a link for that.

Here's my article
http://archive.democrats.com/view.cfm?id=3913
Charlie Rangel was saying: "Sometimes you know someone by his friends, sometimes by his enemies. There was no one who tried to kick this man down that did not try to kick us down first!" I felt the ground shake with the crowd reaction. He also addressed the hecklers: "I'd like to thank my Republican friends in Congress for sponsoring this group."

He then introduced Bill as "The last President elected in this country," adding that "If we'd have our way, we'd re-elect him all over again!" The crowd was positively jumping!
He addressed the hecklers too: "I see a sign there: 'What did you do for Harlem as President?' That's a fair question. First, I promised I would turn the economy around, then I made sure I invested about $600,000,000 in Harlem so I think I did keep my promises to Harlem."
