CBS News: "Hillary Clinton's ongoing feud with Barack Obama" |
|
This is ridiculous!
This is not a "feud" - it's a campaign. In campaigns, people go after each other. Their supporters line up against each other.
No one has called the Romney/McCain contest a "feud."
Isn't it strange that the media is trying to turn a campaign between a black man and a white woman into something other than a campaign? It's a "feud." It's a "food fight." They're treating it like there's something wrong, in fact aberrational, about them campaiging hard.
This is no different than calling Hillary "shrill" and calling her laugh a "cackle" or calling Obama "articulate" and consistently asking if he he's too black or not black enough.
Anyone who wants to argue that a black or female candidate somehow has an advantage because of race or gender need only look at the crap that these two candidates have to put up with - crap that no white male candidate is facing.
This kind of thing is not limited to political campaigns. It's something that African Americans and women must face every day. I have often felt as if, in every job I've had, I've been piggybacked with an additional part-time job - the part-time job of dealing with the extra baggage that is put on most blacks and women whenever we work in a majority white setting - especially if we're the first or among the very few. The extra scrutiny that we must bear, scrutiny that white colleagues don't have to deal with, the sense that we MUST do well or else no other African American or woman will get a shot, the constant struggling of trying to fit in without selling out, etc.
This media distortion of the campaigns of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are examples of how far we have to go. This is a necessary process, unfortunately, the trial by fire that any woman or minority candidate will have to go through as the first at the front of the line. But it is not less aggravating or unacceptable.

1. No, it's not a necessary process for the Clinton's to continue to lie and spin. |
|
We expect this from republicans, but not within our own party. But nice to know where they stand. Looks like nothing is beneath them in their bag of dirty politics.

6. The media is doing much more damage than the Clintons are |
|
The Clintons - like Obama - are playing hard, but not dirty. It is the MEDIA that is spinning and parsing every word both sides say into far more than it really is.
For example, Bill Clinton has raised questions about Obama's experience. Doing so is not a racial attack, overt or subtle. Any candidate with Obama's type of experience - especially his short time in the U.S. Senate - can be expected to have his opponent try to undermine his experience. It's not a racial thing. Now, there are plenty of other people who HAVE twisted the "experience" claim into a racial dagger. But the Clintons have not.
As an African American woman, I resent having the very real problems of racism, discrimination and racist political dirty tricks diminished by these accusations that any criticism of a black candidate is verboten - while the actual, serious problems continue to be ignored when engaged in by others. By trying to equate Bill Clinton's raising questions about Obama's experience with the very ugly and very real racist tactics that still are used in the political world clouds the issue and trivializes the problem.

9. You keep saying that ...but I'm not convinced anymore than |
|
the first time you repeated that Hillary was liar. You are deliberately pushing that meme trying to make it stick. But it won't in my mind. Stuff a rag in that meme!

3. A personal feud sells papers (and advertising). |
|
It's a story anyone can understand. It doesn't involve "boring" numbers, policy statements, or anything else that can't be conveyed with a pretty picture and a sound byte.

7. If John Edwards were the frontrunner, he'd be taking the same crap |
|
in a different wrapper. The only reason Edwards right now seems immune to or above all of this is that he's not in the line of fire.
If he were on top of the heap, they'd be coming after him just as hard.

10. And why isn't he "in the line of fire"? Why isn't he "on top of the heap"? |
|
I am sure he could handle it. I'm sure he'd love the chance.

11. Well hell at least obama is trying to play the refs(mediawhores) |
|
Hell folks, it’s starting to look like a pattern. Obama says something deliberately provocative, then complains about being misrepresented or double-teamed. In basketball, to continue a metaphor Obama would certainly recognize, it’s called “working the refs.” Players do it when they’re losing.
Obama will win South Carolina but will lose the nomination....Tough to get caught in a lie on national television when you been accusing your opponent of the same thing....EX. The Today Show....Obama caught in lie about single payer......

13. A campaign is when you run on your own record and issues |
|
The Clintons are making the Lee Atwater Playbook look like a Boy Scout manual. They have driven the level of the campaign so low and have played it so dirty that it is indeed unprecedented.
When Hillaryworld tried to make an issue of Obama's kindergarten paper, that reached such a low level that political experts were confounded to find anything that reached that far down in political dialogue.
Misrepresenting Obama's votes and quotes and flatly bald-faced lying about his record is certainly historical in the worst way. When you see an ex-President that is getting calls from his peers telling him to shut his pie hole, you see plainly someone who has already defaced the American Presidency take it to the next lowest level.
To call this nonsense just a "campaign" soils the very idea of democracy.
