Sour Grapes (Kennedy and Kerry)
Edited on Mon Jan-28-08 07:31 PM by gulliver
I don't think Aesop applies here. Kerry and Kennedy are both arguably less than sweet grapes. There needs to be a parallel fable where the fox jumps up, gets the grapes, finds them nothing special, and tells everyone else how sweet they are.

I remember Ted Kennedy was the Bill Clinton of his day, at least in terms of scandal. Accepting Kennedy's endorsement strikes me as borrowing from the GE to win the primary. I don't think that is wise. Obama's younger voters might not remember Kennedy's past. They should look it up before they decide outright that a Ted Kennedy endorsement is the Holy Grail. Kennedy probably doesn't mind them thinking that, of course, and maybe that is part of the point.

But let's get to Kerry and then back to Kennedy.

Kerry's endorsement is no better than Kennedy's in the GE. Again it reads like borrowing against the GE for a boost in the primary. I would be stunned if either Kennedy or Kerry are asked to campaign for Obama should he win the nomination.

And another thing about Kerry is that Kerry doesn't think he is out of the running for the presidency himself. So don't discount political calculation in his motives for endorsing Obama. If Obama loses, Hillary is gone, and Kerry gets a youth vote buzz.

Finally, don't forget revenge. Hillary threw Kerry under the bus in '06 (inappropriately in my opinion). Whatever her reasons, you can bet Kerry remembers, and so does his very, very good friend and co-Senator from Massachusetts, Ted Kennedy.

I fully believe Kerry intended his gaffe as a joke, but if you remember, we had a few nervous days in 2006 when this happened.

9. and Rush calls soldiers phony ...
and Rush's pimply ass is hailed as a hero, and we're "taking his words out of context" ... even when we played his words in context completely ...

4. You are describing something called...
...politics. Probably some things you mentioned are factored in to endorsement decisions. Sometimes. There is another possibility: Kerry Kennedy represent the progressive side of the party, while the Clintons are more centrist. Endorsing Obama and electing him moves the party to the left (to sort of where it was before Bush slammed the spectrum so far to the right). ...maybe. :)

6. Hope so.
If he wins the GE, I will be very, very happy. He's got a pretty good case.

11. There has been a long standing divide between the two families - power struggle
I have seen may manifestations through the years and I noted that none of the Kerry 2004 people on DU support Hillary (it's a grudge that lasts). Other candidates' 2004 supporters are fairly split but not Kerry's.
I had no doubt that one way or another they'll come out against Hillary. A primary endorsement and repeating the discredited MSM points about racial division was a bit more than I expected - but this year everything is a notch above.
Kerry taking the donors from Edwards and giving them to Obama was the first salvo (the payback to Edwards was the cherry on top - the main intention was to declare war on the Clintons.
Now they are going to play into the "Obama - victim of the Clintons" official strategy outlined earlier this month
"http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/01/obama_and_clinton_to_clintons.php
"The outlines of a strategy are becoming visible. Obama and his surrogates will operate under the assumption that the more aggressive Hillary Clinton campaigns, the more outbursts Bill Clinton has, the more voters in interior red and purple states will find the Clintons off-putting and that the negative feelings will obscure the Clinton mantra that only she (and he) can stand up and protect their interests."

15. Drawing a blank.
Sorry. Leahy could have karate chopped Cheney that one time, I guess, but you can only expect so much. My Senator is Claire McCaskill.
