A Caucus RESOLUTION -- Please adapt to your location, and speak up for it!
I've written this up, and will take to my caucus, and make sure it's passed to go to the County Convention. Please do the same in your locality! (Notice there is no call for more shelter.... we need PERMANENT housing, not more temporary, makeshift!)

Caucus Resolution

Whereas there are 9 million US citizens who require low-income housing to survive:

Whereas there are 6 million low-income units existing, many inadequate and substandard which leaves at least 3 million people homeless at any given time:

Whereas ......... County has a lack of low-income housing, with either long waiting lists or not even a waiting list:

Whereas there are low-income elderly and handicapped people in ..... County, and .......... in particular:

Whereas there are minimum-wage workers with no low-income housing they can afford in ...........:

Whereas there are ............. residents fighting in Iraq who will have no affordable place to reside when they return:

Whereas the women fighting in Iraq are returning with a much higher incidence of PTSD than the men, and many will not be able to fully function when they return, and their community owes them a decent living:

Whereas there are women in ......... living in destructive relationships because they can’t afford to rent a place on their own:

Therefore, be it resolved that .......... MUST come together as a community and provide low-income housing for residents who need it.

"Nominated," as H2OMan says. I guess "kicked" goes without saying.

19. great idea!
We don't have caucuses here. Would this be something to address to a county judge, maybe?

I'm thinking that what we need is another version of Habitat for Humanity where older, salvageable buildings are fixed up to be used as low income housing. This would be a great works program for creating jobs--our next President needs to consider doing something like this.

20. Take it to townhalls, your local Dem meetings, etc.
Edited on Tue Jan-29-08 01:09 PM by bobbolink
Of course, you would first take out all the legalese... hehehe

Really, wherever you can take this info, please do so. EDUCATION is all... so many are still in the Raygun mentality, and that includes "progressives"!! (Just met one this weekend who said I was the first "real" homeless person she had met, and she was stunned at what I was telling her!)

As for Habitat... please, don't get me started! I had that nice, homey image of an elderly Jimmy Carter with a hammer in his hand, but.... in reality, it isn't meeting many needs, and it soaks up a lot of money from the community. Those of us who live on $637 a month, and there are many right here on DU, can't afford a Habitat home... we're locked out.

I know an older woman who gets more from SS and could swing the $400 a month, but there is no way she could do 500 hours of physical labor!! It's only for a very small and select group. The other 3 million PLUS of us are left out in the cold, literally this time of year.

It doesn't have to be old, rundown buildings with asbestos, etc. If communities took this seriously, they COULD DO IT. Right here in Colorado there is talk of spending something like 90 MILLION of public money for a new locale for the National Western Stock Show!! If they can do that, they can build nice, new, pleasant homes for many of us!!

It's a matter of priority, and to change those priorities, we MUST EDUCATE and get people past the Raygun shit!

 :loveya:

22. I'm into recycling
which is why I think of reusing older buildings. Another thing is that in small towns like the one where I work, these older buildings are within walking distance of supermarkets and pharmacies and the like.

My husband is disabled, but has plans for building us a home made of papercrete. If he can find someone to do the physical labor, we'll have a home with super insulation, fireproof, soundproof, and made with 1/3 recycled paper. This is another innovation that, if pursued, could help bring homes to the homeless. An engineer friend of ours has actually made designs for a house that will cost $5000 to build, using this material. And part of the expense is for solar panels so that the electricity for lighting is generated on site. He works with the Choctaw on the res in OK--don't know how far he's taken the plans, haven't heard from him in a while. But I wanted you to know that folks are thinking of innovative ways of making sure everyone has shelter.
