I am very concerned about McCain.
McCain scares me as a candidate. For one, my wife has said she will vote for him over Hilary. And she is a reliable liberal.

I don't think Obama stands much of a better shot, though, against McCain.

I was hoping and hoping for Romney, he would have been an easy win for any of our candidates.

Why, oh why does it have to be McCain? Someone talk me out of my tree, please.

14. You brought your wife's status into the discussion
as proof regarding the validity of your hair wrenching concern over chipmunk. Your wife is no liberal. The proof of that is your assertion that she will vote for chipmunk, a very conservative militaristic nutjob reknucklian over a centrist such as Clinton.

30. How many times are you going to rewrite this post?
Your wife is not a liberal. You raised her status as a liberal as proof for your op: "For one, my wife has said she will vote for him over Hilary. And she is a reliable liberal." That statement raises a self contradictory doubt regarding its truth. Your wife is not a liberal if she would vote for another four years of reknucklian rule.

And you will have nothing else to say about it, believe me.

I find it very hard to believe that someone who would vote for McCain could consider themselves a liberal.

Perhaps they think they are, but that does not make it so.

She would vote for a candidate who has promised us "many more wars?"

Sounds really liberal to me.

But your wife's questionable status aside, you should be scared of McCain. I don't think the country would survive another four years of this nonsense.

Therein lies the difference. Will people who can't stand Hillary vote for Obama?

I personally think that Obama will bring so many first-time young and black voters to vote for him that it will offset the negative image some people seem to have of him.

But I'd submit that Obama would have an easier time with him than Senator Clinton.

McCain isn't going to pull huge support from the rightwing base. He NEEDS indy/moderate votes to win a general election. Obama has a better shot at peeling off those votes than Clinton does.

Edited on Tue Jan-29-08 10:03 PM by pa28
Consider a few things:

-The Republican base can't stand McCain and they may be disinclined to crawl over broken glass to vote as they did for Bush. I think they're turnout will be adversely effected and will probably cancel out any independents he captures.

-He's vulnerable to negative campaigning. Consider what Bush said about him in 2000 and how much of it stuck. Forget the love child rumor, I know Democrats would not stoop that low, but he was portrayed as mentally unstable and angry, an image of him that became conventional wisdom.

-He's showing signs of old age and physical deterioration. He slurs his speech at times, he occasionally looks slow and confused . . . as if he needs a nap or a bathroom break. Contrast that with Obama or the Democrat of your choice.

-He's been licking Bush's boots, sucking up and generally treating the most hated man in America like God. It's all on the record, he's agreed with all the disastrous mistakes and we can make it sound like a McCain win will be Bush's third term.

I know we need to respect the dangers of each of their candidates and not underestimate. We've got everything going in our favor this time and the wind at our back. This is a time for confidence.

Though I do wish more Republicans were like McCain, but as a candidate he is very weak.

All we have to do is hammer on his age, his flip-flops, his misguided support of the war (1000 years in Iraq? What a stupid thing to say), his lack of knowledge about the economy and BEST of ALL make him try and defend Bush's "record".

But I will be enthusiastically rooting for Hillary Clinton if John McCain is the alternative. Even Republicans think he's insane and I wouldn't want to give him the suitcase with the nuclear button. The Democrats could run the same "Daisy" ad they ran against Barry Goldwater in 1964 and this time I think it would be accurate. I think the world of McCain's service as a veteran and hero. But I don't think he can be trusted with our military.

I don't give McCain much of a chance. I think this is the year for the Democratic Party. Whether it's Hillary or Barack, new voters are going to be coming out of the woodwork to vote. But ...... you never know. The Republicans will probably have a lot of damaging research against either one of our candidates up their sleeve.

61. "At least McCain seems to be honest."
John McCain Hypocrite
by Doug Ireland

John McCain, the media's darling, has found a clever way around his own campaign finance reform law to take big corporate bucks in furtherance of his political ambitions while carrying water for the corporate mammoth providing the dough. But the national press is ignoring the story.

The Associated Press first ran the story of John McCain's odorous but lucrative Senatorial service to the communications giant Cablevision on the afternoon of March 7. But, while some local papers in McCain's home state (like the East Valley Tribune) have run the story, nothing has as yet made it into the print editions of the New York Times, the L.A. Times, the Washington Post, or any of the half-dozen other big city dailies I checked (although, if one searches the hundreds of AP stories available on the Post's website on its Politics page by clicking on "Latest Wire Reports," one can find it there--but how many readers would bother to do that?) One notable exception: the Kansas City Star.

Here's what the AP's investigation found:

McCain repeatedly intervened on behalf of a policy Cablevision favored -- one which "congressional and private studies conclude could make cable more expensive" -- while his chief political adviser, Rick Davis (who's masterminding McCain's probable '08 presidential rerun) solicited $200,000 in contributions from Cablevision to an institute that promotes McCain and pays Davis a $110,000 annual salary.

The Reform Institute was set up to promote McCain and his issues--especially campaign finance reform, embodied in the famous McCain-Feingold law. This Institute is "a tax-exempt group that touts McCain's views and has showcased him at events since his unsuccessful 2000 presidential campaign," and it "often uses the senator's name in press releases and fund-raising letters and includes him at press conferences," the AP says. And, of course, it provides a cushy sinecure with no heavy lifting for McCain's main man, Davis, as he prepares the pontificating Senator's next presidential run. Cablevision's contributions account for a whopping 15% of the Institute's budget.

63. If Hillary is the D nominee and McCain is the R nominee
Get ready for at least another 4 years of Republican rule. She has 0 shot against McCain.

I think in trying to win the favor of the R establishment, he is actually losing his mind. And I can't help thinking that he has a vindictive agenda for what he suffered in war. I just don't know about him. I know someone who has to interact with him frequently, and it sounds like he's not a very likeable guy either. I don't know if that's part and parcel of his self-perceived power, to always think he's right on everything and doesn't care to incorporate opinions of others... Now you've got me in the tree.....

69. Sadly you are not in a tree, it's the people around you that are in the rabbit hole under the tree.
