Although the parallels to some undemocratic countries are really bothersome.

I remember learning about "economic rents" and bribery being a major cause of destabilizing third world economies. Then I was like "wait a minute, that goes on here all of the time". Of course in the third world it's on a much larger scale and we are a rich enough nation that we can compensate for it.
