Berkeley High Student Rejects Call for Clinton EndorsementUpdated: Jan 31, 2008 05:57 PM
BERKELEY (KRON) -- It's not very often a major national campaign asks for an endorsement from a 15-year old Berkeley High School student. Still, that didn't stop Ilana Wexler from turning down Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Wexler tells KRON 4's Vicki Liviakis she's joining with many of her friends to support Illinois Senator Barack Obama.
"It's always nice to have optimism and hope and to bring that into the whole mood of politics," Ilana said. "It's hard sometimes because you're going against your opponent, you want to lie, you want to cheat, you want to win."
Ilana shared a stage with Obama in 2004 when both spoke at the Democratic National Convention. The founder of "Kids for Kerry", Ilana drew wild applause when she called out Vice President Dick Cheney for using an expletive to a senator.
"If I said a word like that I would be put in a timeout," the then eleven-year old told the convention. "I think he should be put in a timeout."
Wexler says it wasn't a difficult decision to turn down the Clinton campaign's endorsement request. She has a specific challenge for fellow students.
"How can you not vote?" Wexler asked. "You have this amazing privledge in this society, why don't you just take advantage of it?"
