Did Al Gore make the biggest mistake of his life not running this year? |
|
I think it was. He would have easily had the nomination and had a good chance of beating Bush.
The guy just has horrible political instincts.
Endorsing Dean was another example of that.

1. if not being president is a mistake |
|
I'm sure Al has plenty of other things to concern himself with other than whether he is president.

Poor Al seems like the most unlucky guy. All the bad stuff that has happened to him has seemed to brought out the progressive in him though. :bounce:

3. I don't think so. People still don't like him. |
|
I do, but most people don't.
I think the best thing he could have done is what he did...endorse a candidate early and help him gain the nomination (and the Presidency). Unfortunately, it just didn't happen with Dean (for numerous reasons). The plan was still a good one, though.

4. maybe he thinks that following Bush . . . |
|
will be a thankless job . . . the next president will inherit the mess Bush has made, and cleaning it up won't be easy, especially with a Republican Congress . . .

You could also throw in his decision to not run for president in '92 (I read that Clinton wouldn't have even run if Gore had) and of course, his selection of Lieberman. But he was Veep for eight years and he did win the election in 2000 so I guess those worked out a little better for him.
I think it's a real horserace between Gore and Mario Cuomo as to who has the most frustrating combination of touched-by-greatness presidential stature and almost tragically bad political instincts. I think he would've kicked ass this year. But as a friend said, You can't force someone to run for president.
