There are times my mouth gets in front of my passion..I will try to do better
Yes..
Believe it or not..I have a lot of passionate beliefs.
I also take some things personally..which is not a good trait..but one that goes along with passion.
Let me tell you a bit about me.
I am a gay man.
I live my life shattering gay myths.
I am 100 per cent anti war.
I support our troops however.
I serve in the military..proudly..to show people that gays CAN serve..and that liberals do OPPOSE the war, yet SUPPORT the troops.
I am HIGHLY respected by my commanding officers and those who serve under me.
I have met too many good men with traumatic brain injuries, and lost limbs, who paid the price for Chimpy's mistake.
I have spent hours on the phone, talking soldiers out of comitting suicide until help reached them.
I work for the Boy Scouts (another anti-gay organization)..mentoring youth..as a gay man, and have the support and respect of all of my superiors.
I am also a mentor for a young male organization for troubled youth, and work daily to show them the way to accomplish positive things..we have made great strides.
I do not back away from a fight.
I speak a lot before thinking..a trait many of us share.
I was here on Iowa night...
I posted a thread congratulating Obama..I was told "Fuck off loser"
ON NH night, when Hillary won..an Obama supporter posted about how bwad she felt. I encouraged her that although I did not support her candidate, that she shpuld never give up hope.
I also get carried away..
a lot.
Double standards are a sore spot for me..i stick up for the underdog and never give up the fight.
I have gone over the line at times.
If I offended, I apologize for my language..not my beliefs.
I have been inspired form a few supporters tonight..
I will try to improve..and not go over the line again.
I am capable of vividly expressing my beliefs without getting personal.
All I ask..is that others do the same.

7. "Double standards are a sore spot for me..i stick up for the underdog and never give up the fight."
So then please explain(unless you're on medical duty):

I am 100 per cent anti war.
I serve in the military

Uhh, why?

You do realize that when push comes to shove, the military is asked to do one thing and one thing only--fight, participate in war?

I'm not picking a fight, really. I just don't get it and see this sort of thinking communicated all of the time, and I don't get it.

Like you, "I am capable of vividly expressing my beliefs without getting personal."

17. Please know I'm not pecking a fight here.
But I just don't get it.

I guess you could say that your belief that gay men and women should be able to serve in the military trumps your belief in being anti-war. But this begs a serious question: why would you want gay men and women to serve in something which you admit you oppose. Wouldn't a more rational thing be that you participate in something that you both believe in AND that supports the rights of gay men and women--marriage, adoption. In other words, wouldn't it be better to express your support of gay men and women through love (marriage and/or adoption) than through a mechanism of violence which you've admitted you oppose?

"Its an honor thing for me."
I don't get this. You honor something you oppose? Or you believe it's honorable for you to do something you oppose for the greater good of gay rights? And, if the latter is the case, then you would kill another human being in an unjust war (which is what military men and women are asked to do at times--even if they're gay)) to somehow make a point about gay rights?

Something here just doesn't seem right. Maybe I'm not seeing it correctly. If you're not really that anti-war, then things begin to make sense. Or if you're really not doing it to prove a point about gya rights, then things could make sense. But not as it stands--at least not to me.

14. The is no discrepancy
between being anti-war and serving in the military. One can serve in the armed forces to defend.. protect, etc.. and still despise war itself.

26. Hmmm, yes, but . . .
If one is serving in Iraq right now, is one protecting, defending, or etc.ing. How about in Viet Nam? Korea? WWI? Just asking.

I'd think that someone who is anti-war would avoid at all costs these grey areas. I wouldn't put myself in that position. Again, being anti-war makes being in the military problematic--especially considering the history of our involvement in various wars.

I am one of those invisible DU'ers. I rarely even reply. But I'm here reading and reading every day. So when I want to actually start a thread, it's really rare and I try to put some thought into it. Maybe I'm mostly unsuccessful, but I do try to put some thought into it and "write" my heart out. I think I do try to be fair. I try to not let an "unconsidered" opinion get out. I try to back up stuff with links and sources. I can't say I've started a thread on the fly more than a few times in four years here.

So, I think you should know that it's difficult for people like me to see others who feel the need to post every angry or divisive thought every minute of the day.

I'd like us to continue raising the bar on the level of discourse, and I like to see more journal-like, diary-like posts here on DU. I see amazing articles and editorials that drop like stones. Amazingly researched or heartfelt, thoughtful posts - again, they drop like stones.

While every other near-thoughtless, snarky, vitriolic candidates thread seems to make it to the Greatest page. It makes no sense. Anything erudite or researched isn't "sexy" enough for this board! Does anybody read in the topic forums? And just who are the people recommending the worst of the threads? They really stand behind the idea of a "recommendation"? A recommendation SHOULD mean that the DU'er is recommending a thread as being beneficial, informative or wildly entertaining FOR THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY! I wouldn't show most threads on the Greatest to my kids (21 and 17) because I want them to think liberals and progressives still effing capable of thoughtful, critical THINKING!

I get so irritated that here of all places, this has turned into a character-debate, horse-race about the candidates themselves INSTEAD of any analytical comparison of THE ISSUES. GD:P should be full of researched comparison on 100 factors about healthcare - instead we get 3,432 threads about "the snub". It makes me want to hang my head and cry. GDP should be full of 254 threads comparing energy platforms! Good god, Cheney WON'T be there makign and controlling the energy policy for the world anymore - who is comparing the candidate's stances in detail - without snarky, snide poop-throwing?

Who are the posters -- no offense, but people like you -- who feel the need to torment and torture the rest of the community with your anger and opinions - at ALL times? Sure sometimes, but why ALL the time? Just who do these 40-thread-a-day people think they are?

I also don't get how anybody can be so on-fire for a candidate and also so against another candidate! Good grief! They're all just people, no better than any of the other 6 billion people on the earth! I get so fed-up with this whole celebrity worship, cult of personality crap. Being President is just a contracted job - a powerful, important job, but just a job. We're not electing the next God, and they all have dirty, filthy hands.

I guess I must love it here, because I come back every damned day, several times a day.

But I think we can do better, be brighter, be a progressive force - but these low-end posts just drag us all down.

Can we just get away from the character-debate and stick to the fucking issues and planks?

Just some thoughts from an invisible DU'er. I'll go back to being invisible now.

------------------

Edited to take out the unintentional smilies. And to say that I'm sorry if it seems like I'm being santimonious, not my intention.

44. Passion for politics and our own personal issues is a trait we all share,
Lack of discretion is also a very common trait. Perhaps the shitstorm helped you reflect a bit on your tendency to post without discretion and it's something that it seems a lot of folks around here could work to improve. Myself included.

You seem sincere in your post and it'd be nice if the general tone of this forum stepped up to be more peaceful in nature. It's a bit cliche, but you can't change other people's behavior; you can only change your reaction to their behavior.

After last night's debate there was a small window of joy and unity. It'd be nice to see more of that around here. This is a historic presidental nomination and I look forward to the day when we can celebrate a Democratic victory together and put the doom, gloom and hatred behind us.

Peace.

But it is also clear we both share an abiding passion to get our beloved country back to its core values. I salute you for your service to our country and applaud your commitment to rescuing America from the crooks and thugs that have led it for the past 7 years. 64. Why not start positive threads about Hillary and why you think that she is
