I am watching Mike Huckabee on C-Span right now.

He's completely full of $hit, but he does have a charisma that I can see would sell his "fair tax."

He sounds like he cares for the average citizen and I can see his message resonating with a lot of the southern states like Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama.

2. That's exactly why the big money corporatist Republicans won't let him win.
Huckabee is a fundie loon, but he has suggested that being good to the poor is the right thing for Christians to do. This will kill him with the moneybags.

6. yes, and if we're lucky enough of the fundies will listen just
long enough to figure out that the corporate moneybags have just being playing to their prejudices, and using them without giving a damn about them or anybody else.

Who gave them a bunch of lip service and then disappeared when it was time to deliver...

On Edit: Even the fundies are getting tired of being labeled a two issue Abortion and Gay Marriage Group....

4. Talking about the 9/11 hijackers.
Saying that the government couldn't find the people whose visas had expired.

He says maybe we should outsource the job to UPS or FedEx because they can track packages from the time it leaves your house till it gets on the plane till it resides in a distribution center.

The crowd cheers him.

5. What I remember about Mike Huckabee
A veteran Arkansas lawmaker said of him:

"He is the only person I know, besides Bill Clinton, who can pick up a rock, and give a ten minute speech on it."

7. Decide if a new oil filter is less expensive than a new engine. (Huckabee on health care)
Instead of universal health care, we need universal health. He would rather focus on prevention.

He's wacko, but I can honestly admit, he is effective at what he does.

13. I say this in all honesty and I disagree with (almost) everything he says.
He is absolutely a brilliant public speaker with a folksy mix of anecdotes and articulation of how some of this country's policies are hurting average Americans.

He is talking about how he was the first male in his family to ever graduate from high school and the first ever to go to college.

9. I turned to it
a few minutes ago. I think their party has crumbled in a manner not unlike the former Soviet Union. Huckabee is one of the medium sized states outside the Bush Estate. He wants to form an alliance to promote himself, and is reminding the real powers that his people used to support them. But he is finding himself locked out of the real power.

10. Huckabee talking about energy independence.
Talks about countries like Saudi Arabia being enriched by the money Americans spend at the gas pump. We are not going to pay for their protection and allow them to get rich off the backs of hard-working Americans.

19. Of course you can!
You just don't know him yet :-)

He wanted to quarantine all AIDS patients, kinda like a leper colony.

He wants women to "submit graciously" to their husbands.

He thinks natural disasters happen cause we need more God in America.

I'm sure there's more, but you get the idea.

23. But the poster hits on a great point.
He *is* very likeable. He may pull out a few victories in the South, even with being shut out of the race by the media.

20. Huckabee is a fascinating character. He really does care more than other Repubs.
Unfortunately, he is still a Republican and has a terrible policy agenda. FairTax (would destroy the economy), Human Life Amendment (would make even seeking an abortion a federal crime), absurd border policy (120 days for all illegals to go back to their home country) and so on.

Still, as a campaigner? He's an extraordinarily compelling speaker. He speaks in a language that decent evangelical Christians know well, and the Republican party has forgotten -- the language of caring for the poor. I think having him in the race is putting pressure on the party in some positive ways.

27. I think having RP on the ticket has definitely put pressure on the Republican party
Ron Paul is like Huckabee in that his policy platform is even more absurd and demented -- he wants to get out of Iraq, which is great, but he also wants to essentially end the federal government as we know it. No FDA / Worker's Comp / Unemployment Insurance / Social Security / OSHA / EPA / Medicare / Medicaid / Dept. of Energy / Dept. of Education / IRS / FBI / etc., etc.

Even so, Paul's applause lines in the Republican debates were the only moments when they were forced to deal with reality.

Ron Paul won 19% of the votes in Maine's caucuses today, and that's a significant slap in the face. I'm definitely glad they included him.
