Why I support Hillary Clinton |
|
and no it isn't all about McClurkin. McClurkin is a symptom of my real problem with Obama. Simply put, I don't think he has learned the right lessons from the 1990's and I think she has. Time and again, Obama has through his rhetoric, intimated that the problem with the 1990's was at least shared between Democrats and Republicans. That is total, complete, bunk. The GOP had a policy from day one of total non cooperation with Democrats. No compromise ever. They impeached Clinton for at most a trivial matter. They refused to pass hate crimes in the face of Sheppard's death, and refused to pass ENDA in the face of numbers of close to 2 to 1 in favor. Don't even get me started on economics.
The GOP needs to be fought tooth and nail. The conflict in this country isn't because "gays live their lives in ways which cause discrimination". The GOP wasn't the party of ideas in the 1990s. Democrats aren't half at fault here. There will be no honeymoon period for our nominee if he or she wins. I don't think Obama has a clue about this. Hillary does. All the pretty words of their platforms, and they are largly the same, will be worthless as a three dollar bill, without the knowledge that the winner will have to work every single day to beat the GOP. It really is that simple.
I don't think Obama is evil, nor that Clinton is perfect, but I do think that she learned the most important lesson of the last decade or so and he hasn't. I want to elect a fighter, not a conciliator. I want to elect a woman who knows that the GOP isn't the party of ideas but that we are.
I firmly believe Clinton will bring us ENDA, health care, and troops out of Iraq. I firmly believe she will bring us hate crimes, a return to honest finances, and a foreign policy to make us proud. I know Obama would try for the same things and the more that I could list. I just don't think he has learned the right lesson and thus won't be able to deliver.

10. Good job DSC. I still remember that Hillary was the 1st First Lady to march in a Pride parade. |
|
Just symbolic, but meaningful, coming after 12 straight years of Republican rule.

12. If Democrats fail to get 60 seats in the Senate |
|
and we'll likely need more than 60 to compensate for conservative Democrats, how will Hillary get anything passed without at least a few Republican votes?
I'd really like to know what you're thinking about that because I see a lot of posts like yours and it doesn't seem like the "let's fight the Republicans because they're evil" crowd is thinking this through.

16. We will have to do what Reagan did |
|
Reagan didn't compromise with us, he rolled us over. The GOP has several Senators who can be rolled if they don't get replaced. Collins, Snowe, Sununu, Gregg, Specter, Smith and Coleman all come to mind.

23. How did Reagan do that? |
|
I'd say he did it by inspiring people and getting the public on his side. I think Obama is a lot better at that than Hillary. If Hillary wins at all it will be by a very slim margin and her negatives will stay high. She's never going to have the kind of broad support to roll over Republicans.
And showing that you're the good person who is reaching out and at least trying to work with Republicans is part of getting the public on your side.

25. Hillary showed she can work with some Republicans when she entered the Senate |
|
Edited on Sun Feb-03-08 05:12 PM by Tom Rinaldo
And she showed she knows exactly what the Republicans are capable of when she called out "the vast right wing conspiracy". I like her balance on this. She had taken every hit that the right wing has devised to launch; whether based on fact or fiction - she's been through it and now she's back pushing for universal health care. But Hillary actually knows how to cooperate when cooperation can be fruitful. She doesn't have to convince me of that, it's a fact, she's done that too.

30. So then its OK to work with Republicans sometimes? |
|
Edited on Sun Feb-03-08 05:20 PM by Radical Activist
Reaching out to work with Republicans can mean compromising your values but it doesn't have to. Here's what decides it for me. Obama reaches out to Republicans but he still has a solid progressive voting record throughout his entire career and he has successfully worked with Republicans to get progressive things passed. Clinton on the other hand has a history of compromising values. If her husband's term is any measure then that's the last thing I want. I don't want another Democratic president that gives us Republican measures like a consolidated corporate media, welfare reform, don't ask don't tell, and free trade.
