What a voting ordeal I had...
I'm in NJ. My town has a main town (the bourough) and a township. Before we moved into our current house in town 2 years ago we lived with my parents for a few months in the township. It was during an election season so we registered to vote there. Then when we moved to our current residence we changed it again and we've voted in our town at the correct voting place for the past 2 elections. We've been on the correct list every time at the correct address. No issues in 2006. No issues in 2007.

So today we go to vote and they say we're not up on their lists. They call the township and sure enough we're on the lists there even though we've voted in town for 2 elections. So they call the county clerk and he says to go to the township and vote there. Trek on over there and they tell me no can do. They call the clerk again and he says we have to go back to the town and fill out a provisional ballot. Go to the town and the women are about 90 years old and have no idea what a provisional ballot is. The call the clerk get it sorted out and I fill it out and hand them the ballot.

I have no confidence that vote is going to get to where it needs to go. Ugh.

1. Yikes. That sounds like a nightmare.
That really sucks. Really shows your dedication though, haha. What part of NJ are you from, BTW?

11. Hey! Me too.
I'm all the way on the border of warren county, in Long Valley. Normally HEAVILY republican, but there was a big heap of "declare democrat" slips when i went to vote!

7. Nah, I don't think so...
Just really elderly women who had trouble understanding what I was describing to them.

9. Perfect example...
...of why we need major election/voting reform.

I lived in northern Middlesex county for more than 30 years. My nephew lived with us for about ten of those years and voted using our address. After he moved out, each year when I voted, his name remained on the registry, even though he was voting from his new home in northern NJ. I told them each year that he no longer lived in my house, but he remained on the rolls for at least five years!

I then moved just two miles away from Middlesex County to Union County where I started voting. Just out of curiosity, I returned to my old voting place and, sure enough, I was still on the rolls there too!

There was really nothing (except honesty) that would have prevented each of us from voting twice.

When someone moves and registers to vote in their new residence, why isn't he/she removed from the rolls automatically from their previous voting place?
