4. "A loaded gun pointed right back at the White House."

Nobody talks as astutely as Wes.

Ads "dividing the families".

Just nobody.

7. And who said no one was criticizing Bush and 911?
Clark was. He always did, and he did again this morning. He said Bush had been stalling the commission and of course the great line about a gun pointing back at them.

And then the smarmy Wolff says don't you agree with Bush when he says we need strong leadership..blah blah...Clark astutely turned it back on Wolf and said Kerry would provide that leadership, but the right way.

5. He was great, as usual
Wolf couldn't get a straight answer on the VP question, though. I wonder why he is not going with the group to Iraq. Maybe they're afraid of security for him. He could be a big target.

8. Well he got a straight sideways answer the only way to respond responsibly
and put the focus back where you want it: (everybody) help defeat Bush. Any how, any way, any where, any time.

11. Clark has wised up
If he had said 'yes' all the headlines would read...Clark wants to be VP. Clark knows that it would be bad manners to go after it...Kerry has to decide. Clark did just the right thing by side-stepping.

9. He didn't say he wasn't going
He said he didn't know about it. How advanced is this plan? It's the first I've heard of it, but I've been a bit busy and missed a lot of news. I find it hard to believe he wouldn't be going, unless Kerry just needs him here more than there.

15. Exactly. On the one hand, I can't think of anyone better to to go
over there and get a firsthand look at the situation, but as soon as I'd had that thought came The Fear. I've been so afraid for him throughout this thing...

It's possible Kerry plans to announce Clark as his running mate before the group goes over. Then Clark would have Secret Service protection at least, although I suppose it's possible the whole group will have it in any case. I'm pretty unclear about who gets SS protection, and under what circumstances.

As an antidote to The Fear, I always take a look at this paragraph from Wes's interview in Rolling Stone back in October. It never fails to crack me up, especially the bit about his bodyguards "jumping around in trees" behind him:

"...You know, I had the job Eisenhower set up as the first supreme allied commander of NATO. I had 70,000 Americans under my command and eighty-nine countries to worry about, from the Netherlands to South Africa. When I went for a walk, I had thirty-five bodyguards jumping around in trees behind me to protect me. I was under threat from Al Qaeda and the Serbs. In other words, it was a big government job. My wife said, 'Why do you want another one? Is there something about you that likes to be institutionalized?'"

17. Going to Iraq?
We don't know he won't be on that team, do we? I mean, he's not gonna announce it on Wolf's show, before Kerry's people have a chance to announce who's going and when.

I'm not saying he will be on the team, or that he had even been notified of it. If anything, Kerry may feel it's more important for Clark to be back here raising money (having no idea how long the team would be in country). But I do think Clark would be a good choice, to be able to talk to the military guys, many of whom he knows personally, and to give his take on whatever intell/info they collect, figure out what info they still need and how to go about getting it.

12. We should post links to these threads so they can see how popular Clark is
Given that the interview was about 5 minutes it's amazing how much we are discussing it! Clark is incredibly beloved by Dems. I hope not just CNN but John Kerry sits up and takes notice.

13. I don't think Clark would be going
because of security reasons. My guess and hope is that he will be the VP pick and if Kerry sent him the speculation would be immense and would force Kerry to either say no, sound evasive or announce his pick sooner rather than later and they need to get more free news cycles from the vp choice.

16. Yes, although he's a soldier, I had a knot in my stomach at the thought
of him going to that hell hole. We need him here, safe, to save our country. Everybody's life over there is precious, but Clark is so important in our battle to ensure the Republic's survival.

19. Hahahaha!
Wes Clark would rather go to Iraq than be vp. You know that is the truth.

One of the first times I heard him speak (I didn't watch the war on tv) was some web achieved piece. The speech was interesting, and was followed by a Q & A. A young guy in the audience asked him about terrorists and 911. Well, Clark started him a fairly technical and complete answer...but suddenly broke off and quietly said, "Never be afraid."

I'm watching this on some funky little computer screen, and let me tell you, my back straightened up, and my mind said, "Yes sir." Why?

He'd go in a minute, and he is never afraid.

Anyway, he probably has as much or more to worry about in this country.

Looks like the group will be: Biden, Statsen (Kerry aide) and Rand Beers
