Laura Bush Vs. Teresa Heinz
Laura Bush vs. Teresa Heinz Kerry

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The presidential campaign pitting incumbent George W. Bush against Democratic challenger John Kerry is also shaping up as a dual between their wives, women of diverent backgrounds and personalities who could prove decisive in the November vote.

First Lady Laura Bush, figuring prominently in her husband's the television ad campaign running since Thursday, "tries to carry herself as the humble wife of the humble statesman," said David Corbin, political science professor at the University of New Hampshire.

Model wife and mother, the 57-year-old Laura Bush has always eschewed an active role in politics.

A former Texas schoolteacher and librarian, the only daughter of an accountant and housewife, the first lady exercises a moderating influence on her husband, who enjoys talking about the support she gave him in giving up alcohol and returning to Christian faith.

She symbolizes "the traditional American wife," said Hess. "I think she is generally liked as a person.

Teresa Heiz Kerry, on the other hand, is still largely unknown to Americans.

Born in Moxambique of Portuguese roots, raised in South Africa and in Europe, Teressa Kerry is the rich widow of Heinz ketchup scion John Heinz, the Republican senator from Pennsylvania killed in a 1991 plane crash.

Sponteneous and straight-talking, the 65-year-old polyglot mother of three sons worked briefly for the United Nations after studying interpreting in Geneva.

"Teresa Heinz Kerry is a very cosmopolitan, very refined woman," said Corbin. "That too will add to the Kerry presidential bid."

For Hess, it's still too early to say whether Teresa Heinz Kerry will be the asset to her husband's campaign that Lauru Bush is to Bush's.

"Teresa Kerry is a very individualistic, special person," he said. "It is hard to put her in a category. She may have to be used more selectively."

7. Wasn't Laura On The Sauce Back Then?
The article mentions that she was there to support Bush when he decided to give up alcohol after getting arrested for driving on the glug glug.

I seem to remember that she had her own bottle demons to tame. Am I misremembering?

8. No Comparison

Laura Bush is NOT a model mother..please!
Her silly girls are rebels without a cause. There appears to be no connection between the parents and the children. How she can even begin to talk about family values is beyond me.

Do they ever go to church together? I saw her with one of her girls gone wild in a photo in Europe, Kid had on jeans. No problem for the average teenager, a problem when you are representing the United States of America. Have you seen the latest issue of Globe magazine? Little Barbara Bush is wild, wild, wild.

Kerry on the other hand is so smart. Forgive me for being elitist but Theresa is the 21st Century Jackie Kennedy with a twist. She is very politically aware and does her own thinking.

Laura Bush does not have a thought in her head. If she was an educator, she should have been able to tell that jerk that No Child Left Behind was not the right way to go. She has no pull with her drunken husband or her drunken children.

I want the Kerry's In The White House, they will bring a touch of class to the home. Class has absolutely been missing for the last 4 years.

14. "model mother," heh heh
my *ss.

Pickle's two daughters are drunken ho's.

I saw Kerry's daughter the other day on TV and she looked intelligent and poised.

No comparison. Theresa outclasses Laura a thousand times over- unless you like the valium-addled Stepford look.

she spoke to the issues as well as any elected official does when they have the camera. Very relaxed, very sincere, very unpretentious, very uncanned. She rates a 100 on a scale of 1 to 10 with me.

I like Laura - however, the content is always canned. And I have the feeling that Rove dictated that she would in no way be a Hillary Clinton. And if I'm right, she follows his orders perfectly.
