HELLO!!! Serious questions. about Delegates and Al Franken
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 10:40 PM by PretzelWarrior
first, how many delegates to both candidates TRULY have right now? I know superdelegates could switch, but what is the number right now? Seems every site I go to has different numbers.

second, I saw Al's website say "caucus for Al on Feb 5". I never saw any state results for other candidates and issues other than presidential.

Is the Senate race for Democratic candidate in Minnesota decided? I googled for results and found nothing.

thanks in advance.

2. I forget where I looked - I think the Minneapolis Star Tribune site -
that said the Senate candidate would be chosen at their State Dem Convention in June.

I talked to someone in Minneapolis today who said that at his packed caucus, all but two people went for Franken.

5. Franken Will be the candidate and kick Coleman's ass.
Bank on it. He's up over Coleman in a recent poll.

4. It's not done yet. For a long time, apparently.

"Democratic caucus participants did not decide which candidate will move forward to run against first-term GOP Sen. Norm Coleman. Instead, the Senate hopefuls need to win the support of delegates who were elected at the local caucuses to participate in county and district conventions and eventually the state party convention.

"Franken, Ciresi and Nelson-Pallmeyer each briefly addressed a roomful of DFLers Tuesday night at a St. Paul union hall that served as the party’s caucus-night headquarters. Separately, they greeted supporters and fielded questions from others.

"There also was record turnout among Republican caucus goers, and Coleman campaign spokesman Tom Erickson said that is indicative of interest in the Senate race as well as the presidential contest.

"Looking beyond Super Tuesday, both Franken and Ciresi said they will continue trying to woo DFL delegates to the state convention. The race for a Democratic Senate candidate will not be settled until the party’s state convention in June, Ciresi predicted."

7. The Senate candidate won't be endorsed until the Minnesota State Convention

Minnesota uses a walking subcaucus to get delegates to the state convention, and there it will take something like 60% of the vote to endorse a Senate candidate.

The precinct caucus was just the first step to getting delegates to the state convention who will vote for Al Franken. More will be weeded out at the mid-level conventions that will occur in March and April.
