Legal? Chelsea Clinton delivered coffee to polling place as voting started
Edited on Sat Feb-09-08 02:40 AM by ursi
Tell me. Is this ok? Do you think Chelsea didn't know this was a problem?
I've heard the fuss about the Shuster thing but can't say I'd heard about this. The posts go by here so fast that I probably missed it. Would this be a problem if it was Michelle Obama? Nevermind.

Questions about Chelsea at polling place

(WTNH) _ This might cause a headache for Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign in Connecticut. It's Chelsea Clinton inside a New Haven polling place at 6:00 a.m.

So why might this be an issue? According to state law, candidates or a candidate's representative, such as someone wearing a sign, have to stay 75-feet away from polling places "on the day of any primary".

The daughter of the Democratic presidential candidate was delivering a box of coffee to poll workers and talking with a firefighter in New Haven. According to a News Channel 8 photographer who was there, when the moderator announced that the polls are open, Clinton immediately went outside.

"I did not consider it an issue because she didn't come here, as far as I'm concerned, to influence anything here or disrupt us," said New Haven election moderator Nilda Torres.

The Clinton incident prompted an e-mail from the Secretary of the State's office to the New Haven Registrar of Voters, reminding them of the 75-foot law.

snip...

In a live interview on News Channel 8 at 5:00, Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz said, "I did speak with the Clinton campaign this afternoon and they apologized and said it wouldn't happen again."

11. My question about this is:
What coffee was it? Starbucks? Was it fair trade coffee? Shade grown? She BETTER not be complicit in the oppression of Colombian farmers, and the degradation of the environment!

someone? And the election monitor said it was no big deal?

Was this the best slam you could find on Hillary today? Surely her campaign did something more serious than this.

7. She could have exited stage left just a little quicker,
but I don't have any real issue with it. She paused for a chat, when she should have just kept going - "walk with me, I need to be over there".

She got called on it. She apologized. Nothing to it.

30. No, just say "let's speak over there, away from the polling place".
Of course, this happened on the way out, as the polling station was opening - she might just as easily have not realized she didn't have two minutes. Either way, it was a minor infraction which she apologised for. It's not an issue.

12. I feel bad for Chelsea. Bill screwed up so Chelsea has to take up the slack.
I understand where Shuster was coming from...

He wasn't trying to say she was slutty or anything but that it didn't seem to suit her and felt like she was being shoved into it, not because she wanted to.

She seems much more shy and reserved than this campaigning thing calls for.

When I see her I imagine how I would feel if I were thrust into that situation. Some people thrive on it. Other people dislike it. I would put her in the 2nd group...like me.

15. On behalf of all rational Obama supporters I sincerely apologize
for the trivialities this post presents.

Barack Obama doesn't need issues like this to become President.

Chelsea Clinton appears to be a bright responsible lovely person and both Clinton's deserve the highest compliments possible for raising such a wonderful daughter under such scruitiny as they have had to endure.

Obama supporters please take the high road and leave this wonderful person and her coffee or whatever alone.

Delivering coffee to poll workers and making non-political small talk isn't illegal.

If it was just Chelsea, no problem. But if it was a Clinton campaign stunt, it was illegal.

41. Does the law say can not campaign within75 feet or can't be within
75 feet - because my question to you is if a candidate or candidate representative can't just be within 75 feet - how the hell would they be able to vote.

This is a non issue - I've seen lots of candidates at polling places - on election day - you just can't campaign within the distance limit....

I'm sure she meant well, but it is obviously a very stupid move to do given the media exposure that such an act would create.

Why even go there with that?

45. as a story, it's a non starter ... looks too petty and probably is
They're overplaying the outrage on the pimping comment, and that's a story that has to be told. You can't take that shit. You have to say "no, it's more Clinton diversionary tactics designed to make media defend their questions of the Clintons, while they refuse to produce their tax returns."

They say "Chelsea," we say "tax returns."

Clintons are experts at creating emotional diversionary issues, to misdirect when they're in trouble. They're like some lying, deceptive person who won't answer a question and seeks to redirect the discussion.

49. It's a tradition done practically everywhere
When I was involved in Democratic politics locally we'd deliver coffee and donuts to the poll workers every election day before the polls open and many friends in other towns have told me they do the same thing. The poll workers are from both parties and sit there from 6 am to 9 pm on presidential election days. So shoot us.
