What Schuster Should Have Said "Are Clintons Sending Chelsea Out To Shuck 'n Jive" |
|
Edited on Sat Feb-09-08 11:28 AM by cryingshame
that wouldn't have bothered the Clintons or her fans at all.
”It’s not a TV crazed race. Frankly you can’t buy your way into it,” Cuomo said. “You can’t shuck and jive at a press conference,” he added. “All those moves you can make with the press don’t work when you’re in someone’s living room.”
Curious, the selective outrage.
At least the majority of O. supporters think Schuster's comment was way off base.

18. I was shocked at first - until I read the context. NOT ABOUT CANDIDATES AT ALL |
|
It was about retail politics primaries vs big states.

12. Shuster could have said "Nappy Headed Ho'" that would have been okay, too.. |
|
:eyes: Deflect what Shuster said off onto Cuomo...who isn't a "TV Personality"...but still made a comment that all here found disgusting.
It's amazing how many of those who found "shuck and jive" offensive, though...don't have a problem witht he suggestion that Bill and Hillary are Pimps and that if they are pimps then their daughter is "whoring" for them.
That's okay with a vast majority here. But, if he'd called her a "nappy headed ho'" ...I assume that would be okay. Because she's campaigning and not a basketball star.

13. Since he wasn't talking about Obama |
|
And was talking about primaries in general, and wasn't channeling Hillary or Bill unless Cuomo is a psychic, no, I'm not offended.

14. That was a dumb ass stupid thing for Cuomo to say then also |
|
And a lot of outrage was directed at him at the time. Some Clinton supporters agreed it was an offensive phrase to use, maybe not enough, but that incident fed into a feeling by many, rightly or wrongly, that the Clinton campaign was being racially manipulative. And African America voters in particular seem to have "suspended" half of their prior support for Hillary Clinton as a consequence. Is that not enough real world pay back for you?
I no more believe that Shuster is a hard core misogynist than I believe Cuomo is a hard core racist, but I understand anger directed toward both. Both of them used phrases that one could claim now have slang definitions beyond their original origin, but both phrases are still offensive.
Still I think it fair to note that Cuomo was a partisan acting like a partisan talking about the actual opposing candidate himself. We know that things get rough in politics sometimes when campaigns are directly competing. Shuster however is a journalist who the public turns to get an outside perspective on political contests, and he demeaned not just one of the candidates directly, but her daughter as well.

Just comparing retail politics primaries vs big states? Iowa. NH vs Super Tuesday?

19. Not really. That might reduce the level of dumbness ... |
|
...but not totally eliminate it. Playing politics at his level he should know better in a campaign like this than to keep that phrase in his political vocabulary.
It's been used before in politics when both candidates in a contest were white, and it rarely raised an eyebrow, but that was then and this is now.

16. Mind you, Cuomo was talking about early primaries in small states - both parties |
|
and not even close about Obama at the time. And it still became subject of outrage.
