Update from Omaha - from barackobama.com thread
My precinct, #2, at North High School, was declared as a state of emergency. They expected 300 - 500 people to show up and instead over 1400 showed up.

They filled the high school's auditorium and the cafeteria.

Final count:

Omaba: 1378
Clinton: 26

She didn't get 15% of the vote, so all the delegates went to Obama.

So far so good in NE.

Edited on Sat Feb-09-08 03:07 PM by TwoSparkles
...for grab.

If this was only once precinct, it depends on how populated it was.

Our precinct--which was decent size, had 7 delegates. It will probably
be around 7 or so, but I don't have concrete numbers.

I hope a Nebraskan will chime in! That's a good question.

people rejecting Clinton as anything else. And it's absurd to say it's cultlike. She is not liked in conservative plains states. If you didn't realize that, you haven't been paying attention.

21. How can justify a margin like that among thinking people
Edited on Sat Feb-09-08 03:18 PM by Onlooker
Seriously. There are plenty of reasons to support Obama, from his message to his skin color to his life experience to his past votes and so on, but it makes no sense for a margin of that degree. Did no feminists vote? It's really bizarre to me. It seems to me like people aren't thinking it through. In any true democracy, for good reason there's some sort of division of the vote. Think about it. One candidate getting 98% of the vote. Doesn't that seem very strange? And frankly, I think it's going to spun to the detriment of Obama or at least the community that voted like that. I grew up for a few years in a very conservative town, but even there the Democratic candidate, who was usually a liberal, got at least 30-40% of the vote.

Browse through this Google search for "won 98 percent of the vote"

Obama picked up red states by winning their blue cities. If these numbers are correct, there is a major flaw somewhere and as Democrats, we need to figure out what has gone wrong.

53. that's not true. For instance
Obama took all the rural counties of NH, and most in CO and quite a few in KN. In any case, Omaha is a city. And my statement stands: There is a lot of antipathy toward her in the red/plains states that appears to cross party lines.

I don't understand why an Obama supporter would be "troubled" by that. It's one precinct, not the whole state, although I wouldn't mind if it were the whole state. I'm sure Hillary will pick up some votes in other precincts.

32. In the Republican party, McCain was...
...the clear frontrunner and he trounced the other candidates handily.

We don't say that because McCain ran away with it in some areas, that he's
part of some cult, do we???

In fact, at this point in our primary process---most of these states would be
clear and decisive blowouts.

This year has been competitive for a long time. We're used to seeing a close
race.

Also remember...Clinton didn't step foot in Nebraska. Obama had a rally and 11,000
Nebraskans attended. Plus he had an organized ground game in NE with many paid
staffers. Clinton had no one.

Sorry, but these numbers make sense. They're remarkable, but they do make sense.

42. I agree onlooker..
something is seriously wrong here. I know people will say I feel that way just because I'm a Hillary supporter, but I would accept an Obama win as long as I know the process wasn't corrupted. The people who believe that this is the country speaking or some similiar nonsense are being totally unrealistic. These numbers, if true, mean Hillary voters have been totally disenfranchised somehow, and no Democrat wants that to happen.

Alfred Landon Frank Knox Republican 1,646 1.43% 0"

Were FDR voters supporting a "cult"? The older members of my family would be very interested to know that they were cult members in their younger days.

37. One thing that I think it happening....
...is that Democrats are deciding that they want this thing to end.

It's as if people are going for Obama to coalesce a decisive win that
won't drag out and involve Super Delegates and all of this other nonsense.

I think people are talking among friends, neighbors, coworkers and everyone
is sorta loosely agreeing to go with Obama. He has the momentum right now,
and it seems that this race is clearly breaking in his favor.

I think Dems sense...on many levels, that we need to pick a winner now---and
quit dragging this thing out.

18. The Nebraska caucuses are on steroids!!!!!
This is absolutely unfrickingbelievable!!!

In Iowa, we had 100 percent increase in turnout from 04. It was mayhem, but we got it all
under control. No problems and things went smoothly, once we adjusted to the massive crowds.

We adjusted by moving people from libraries and conference rooms--into gymnasiums and school cafeterias.
We moved people from inside the school--from one room to another. Not that big of a deal.

In Nebraska, it sounds like they had to move from conference room to gymnasium to the parking lot!!!!!

This is totally nuts!!

I am so elated that our country is finally participating in democracy. People are waking up.

I'm so proud of the Nebraska citizens!

Live updates from the Nebraska Democratic caucuses
BY ROBYNN TYSVER
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

1:52 p.m.

The decision to have only one caucus site in all of Sarpy County appears to have been a bad one.

Reports are coming in that the caucus site in Papillion is overhwhelmed.

Thousands have turned up, when organized expected only several hundred.

They are still registering.

Traffic is backed up on Highway 370.

"All of Sarpy County is at this school and they've run out of registration forms," said Cindy Perich, of Papillion.

She had taken today off to caucus on behalf of Barack Obama. But, she left. It was too chaotic.

"It's totally unorganized. I'm totally disappointed with the (Nebraska) Democratic Party," said Perich.

These upcoming states need to prepare for massive blowout turnouts!!

If they don't, they will likely end up with big messes like this and
caucus goers who aren't able to participate.

I suggest that supporters and volunteers from both campaigns flood
the states that are having elections and help out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look what happens when everyone wakes up!

9:30 a.m.

Everyone is patient, but excitement reigns.

"It's absolutely the best thing I've seen seen in decades of being politically active," said state Sen. Tom White.

The lines of people switching parties is long.

Many said they were Republicans or independents who wanted to have a say in the presidential contest. Others wanted change.

"I'm basically fed up with the Republican debacle of this current system. I'm ready for something new," aaid Valada Powell, a Republican who filled out a form to become a Democrat before caucusing.
