"The name of my cousin Dick Cheney won't be on the ballot"
Obama just said this in Bangor Maine at a rally. Why the hell would he even acknowledge that Dick Cheney is his cousin? Hell, that is reason enough right there to make me not trust him.

And there is no shoe up my ass. I heard it ONCE today and find it to be disturbing. That is my right no matter how many times I am told it was a joke. Again, why even mention it in jest? Can't anyone discuss that or is namecalling and nastiness all some know here?

67. Read his stance on climate change and other issues and they didn't thrill me
Also don't like how he dissed an entire generation of Americans by calling us excsessive. There is a lot about him that doesn't thrill me, which I thought was allowed, but I guess just not here. And I actually have listened to his speeches packed with soundbites but have never heard him say this.

Someone asked, who Obama's advisers are.. Think Cheney is going to give JOHN KERRY, the time of day?

Well, friend, Think again...because it won't happen!

One by mentioning it, and the other by joking about it? Again, I'm just trying to understand why he would say it at all. I think for people who may hear that the first time and not know it was in the news, it would make them think twice. Unfortunately, there are many here with a chip on their shoulders.

I think for Dems/Independents, it's a joke that can be forgotten. There's no way I would make any connection between Obama and Cheney (that's just me, but I think others would feel the same). As for southern republicans, I just have this sense that somehow pointing to Cheney brings to light his mixed background (white w/ a Kenyan father). It's a bit cringe worthy for me to go this way, but I just think it doesn't hurt, to in some way insert that thinking.

53. Seems he likes bringing up Cheney's name
Here's another instance where he brings up Cheney's name as if this is some kind of excuse/support for his personal stand decrying marriage for gay persons:

"I personally believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. But I also agree with most Americans, including Vice President Cheney and over 2,000 religious leaders of all different beliefs, that decisions about marriage should be left to the states as they always have been." -- BARACK OBAMA

Gee, I feel all better now that I have no rights because THE WORD has come down from Barack, his cousin Dick, and their 2,000 religious bigot friends.

71. What it boils down to is being an informed citizen (and voter).
And in several threads today, I'll just say that it appears some folks need to take a trip on the information highway.

How can you take some of these opinions seriously when the people who have them are ill or uninformed?

82. I voted for Edwards too. And it appears that you weren't well-informed about Mr. Obama.
Otherwise you would have clearly known (if you were familiar with his campaign) that the Cousin Cheney thing is a long-standing joke.

86. That's a standard part of his speech
When he was here in Boise, he followed it with "You wish you had somebody cool in your family tree, like Thomas Jefferson or Willie Mays." In Boston, with Ted and Caroline Kennedy seated behind him, it was "somebody cool, like a Kennedy."

It will be nice having a president who can smile at himself instead of one who only smirks at the havoc in Iraq or New Orleans.
