BTW, if you all wondered why Gravel had no support here in Alaska last Tuesday, it's because we knew he BEFORE he came up with his folksy peacenik grandpa act. Back in the day, Gravel was drafted by LBJ in 1968 to defeat Alaska's REAL Peace Democrat, Ernest Gruening, in the Democratic primary. Gruening, for those who don't remember, was one of only two members of the U.S. Senate who voted against the Gulf of Tonkin Amendment, along with Oregon's Senator Wayne Morse, who's defeat LBJ also arranged in '68. In an ultimate insult to injury moment, a Gravel supporter, who I'll assume honestly didn't know, claimed it was Gravel who had made that vote, to the hoots and howls of a thousand caucus members.
