Can we talk about the percentage of the white vote Obama got in IA, KS, NE, ID, ND and Maine? |
|
I'm told he can't get the white vote so I'm curious what percentage of the white vote did he get in these states?

And since ours was a caucus, there is no "exit poll" data.. we just formed groups, wrote down clinton or obama and handed in our sheets and left.
I would say at my Caucus (1200) - there were probably 100 black people there. (We live in a western white suburban area). Every black person was on the Obama side. The caucus ended up going about 800 for Obama, 400 for Clinton.
So, 700 whites and 100 blacks voted for Obama in my district. Not sure about others.. but whites all across Nebraska helped get Obama his 68% yesterday!

Hillary got 19% and Edwards got 1% (after getting 37% in 2004).

Where only 3% of Salt Lake's population is black -- and that's high for the state!
It's interesting, though, people ignore the Utah hispanic vote. Salt Lake City is 20% Hispanic and it went overwhemingly toward Obama.

|
White voters are one of the only one of the demographics that have shown they can easily cross sterotypical lines, to be honest. Blacks vote Obama, latinos vote Hillary. White men and women vote Obama or Hillary depending on where you are.

11. Barack is winning white voters all across the nation. |
|
At this point, anyone who continues to suggest otherwise reveals to me something ugly in their nature.
I appreciate you asking this question because it needs to be addressed. Obama is winning the majority of white voters in state after state. And I love it!

That is the only thing that has been said since Super Tuesday. There was concern the racial flap would hurt him among whites but it hasn't. Anyone who says he can't win white votes is an idiot given where he has win. He does have a problem winning white votes in the South, though. This is a documented fact. Consider Louisiana. He got 85% of the black vote but only 23% of the white vote.

15. I had assumed that terminology meant nation wide, in certain areas it flips back and forth. |
|
And even in those areas he gets more white vote than the other demographics, on average. Consider SC where he got 1/3rd.

22. He got 24% of the white vote in SC, third behind Edwards' 40 and Hillary's 36 |
|
His high water mark is 43% in Georgia and that is after almost all of Edwards' support in Georgia went over to him. In the South he has a real problem with the white vote. Everywhere else he is competitive with or wins the white vote. In states like Idaho and Kansas he won whites big.

Yes, he is winning a substantial percentage, but he hasn't won the majority of white votes in most states. He didn't in California, Missouri, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and several others. He did win the majority in a few but certainly not all over the country.

25. In some states. Overall he is losing white voters. The stats reflect this |
|
In fact before Edwards dropped out he was tied with Edwards for a distant second among white voters. His national numbers hide this because he gets 80-88% black support.

You can say he is until the cows come home and give birth to aliens but in the majority of states he isn't getting a majority of the white vote. No one did in Iowa, NH, or SC but in only one did he even get a plurality (and I am not even sure he did in Iowa given the reliance on exit polls as opposed to actual tallies). Despite winning in southern primaries in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, and South Carolina he didn't win the white vote in any of those. He didn't win it in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, California, Tennessee either. He probably did in the rest but those aren't a majority by either number, or population.

20. He won a very good percentage of the white vote in a Democratic Party election. |

The general election is a whole new ballgame. Add Republicans and most independents to the mix, like you have in any general, his percentage will sink.

27. as I have said before, you may need to take Kansas off that list |
|
Yes, Kansas is 91.19% white, but so what? Let me tell you about my county in Kansas. It is 84.18% white. Still, there are 7,158 black people in this county. If 1/3 are of voting age that makes for a potential of 2,386 voters. We had 600 at our caucus, which was a huge turnout. Do you see, however, how a large turnout of blacks can swing the election? 41% of the population of Kansas is in the 13 largest cities, which all contain significant black populations.
To an extent, the same is true of Iowa. In Des Moines, Sioux City, Cedar Falls, the Quad cities, even a smallish town like Mason City - the black population is not insignificant. Neither is it in Omaha or Lincoln.
Of course, I am white and caucused for him, but I also voted for Jesse Jackson in 1988.
