"Why I Voted for Obama": A Rethug Explains His Rationale
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 02:59 PM by MetricSystem
***I grew up in the 1990s loathing Bill Clinton. He and his wife represented everything that was bad about politics — from the corruption and lies they brought from Arkansas to the immoral and embarrassing behavior in the White House. So when some of my conservative friends and colleagues told me they were voting for Hillary Clinton in today’s Virginia primary, I cringed.

One of the best parts of living in Virginia is the ability to cast a vote in either primary — Republican or Democrat. I’ve often found the Democrat races in Northern Virginia far more interesting. Take the contest between Jim Webb and Harris Miller in June 2006. I cast my vote for Miller, even though he was far to the left of Webb. A race between then-Sen. George Allen and Miller would have been far easier for the Republican. Allen might still be a senator had it played out the way I envisioned.

It’s partly for this reason that I decided to cast my vote for Barack Obama today. Although national polls give Obama a small advantage over John McCain in the general election, I firmly believe that McCain would handily defeat the inexperienced Obama. Secondly, I fear what the Clinton attack machine would do to McCain. Their ferocity would be worse than George W. Bush’s ugly attacks in 2000. Anyone who reads this blog regularly knows how much I dislike negative campaigning, and a Clinton-McCain matchup would be just that.

Because my vote for Obama will likely be ridiculed by many friends on the right, I want to explain exactly why I chose to cross party lines to back the Democrat senator from Illinois.***

The point to take away: "Even though I’d never consider supporting Obama in the general election, the thought of casting a vote against Clinton was just too tempting."

1. Can somebody help me out
with the lies and corruption that the Clintons "brought from Arkansas." Maybe a list of all their convictions would help. And a "conservative" pointing the finger at anothers "embarrassing behavior?" Thats rich.

6. This is part of the problem ...
MANY on the right have a real disconnect from reality in general, but when it comes to the Clintons, they are in a whole nother univserse ... They just have NO ability to discern between reality and fantasy ...

3. so the only people that vote for Obama are repukes, so we all must vote for Hillary
there are millions of voters and millions of reasons for voting for one or the other. The anecdotes are played out.

4. So?
I don't care what this guy thinks.

I do worry about Democrats who base their votes on what they think republicans want them to think. We'll do much better if we just run who we think is the best candidate -- whether that person is Obama or Clinton -- instead of trying to figure out the motives of a group of people that are either ignorant, evil, greedy or stupid.

5. He basically says that he'd do anything to avoid a Hillary presidency
... so it's not like Hillary had his vote anyway.

And he also says:

There are some positive things that could result from the first black president and an inspiring young leader.

America’s image around the world almost certainly increase, giving us a greater ability to fight the war on terror. As much as I admire President Bush for his strong foreign policy, there’s no question our country has suffered as a result of his “You’re either with us or against us” way of thinking. That’s unfair to Bush, but it is reality.

If anything, this speaks to the fact that Obama is better at appealing to crossover and indie voters than Hillary.

8. I sometimes visit some of the RW websites just to see what they're
fussing about. This isn't the first time I've heard freeper types talk about crossing over for the primaries and voting for Obama because they think he will be easier to beat in the GE. I can't say if there have been enough to make any difference, but with record numbers showing up for the Democratic primaries, it does make you stop and wonder how many have used this tactic. Not saying that anyone should let this influence their vote, just sayin'.

the dem primaries than during their own.

10. Ignore these token GOP sabateurs. Some are also voting for Hillary.
Whatever. The point is each Dem should vote for candidate they think is the best. Not second or triple guess GOP reverse psychology.

15. Exactly!
We thank, the misinformed person, for his inadvertant support of the better candidate.
