Parents of black children should be for Obama
If you are a man and have a black son or daughter, then you have probably thought many times about the unfair disadvantages blacks still face. (If you are black, you probably don't need to have a black son or daughter to think about it.) We all want our black children to have everything in life that white children have. But everyone knows that is not the way it works out. You only have to look at the makeup of our government to see that equality is not a reality. You can look a lot of other places and see that too.

When you think of an Obama presidency, don't think only of what a black president would mean to you personally. Think of what it would mean to your black son or daughter. That's all.

I'm not suggesting supporting Obama as a sappy form of "reverse discrimination." I believe that available evidence suggests Obama would be a better president than Hillary Clinton on the merits. So the "message" of nominating Obama would not be that a less qualified black man can be president. The message would be that a more qualified black man could be president. That's one of the many common sense things that unfortunately does not go without saying in still-backward America.

:sarcasm:

I guess hispanics may have to consider issues in this election. Now everything is simplified and we don't have to worry about debates or campaining - a good money saver (also sarcasm). As a female I think I'll vote for Condi.

could vote according to their complexion.....the darker ones can go for obama....the lighter ones to hillary....and because it would be unfair for them to split by complexion and gender...hispanic women shouldn't be allowed to vote.....:sarcasm:

14. Parents of girls should be for Hillary then too!
Let's make a deal. All parents of black sons vote for Obama and all parents of girls vote for Hillary. Where there is overlap an advisory opinion from Condi Rice will decide it.

27. Many men are sexist but women are the majority
The number of votes she gets for her gender should more than make up for the votes she loses for her gender. There are a lot of women who will vote for her because of her gender. My sister and her friend are as apolitical as I am political and even they plan on registering to vote so they can vote for Hillary if she is the nominee!

I disagree with the idea we should vote based on identities, especially since I believe it played a role in Edwards never getting a fair shake from the media and him never really contending in the national polls. Just look at the support Obama got with black men, Hillary with white women and compare it to Edwards being tied with white men with both.

12. Now we know why you voted for Bush twice
Folks upthread, don't forget Obama surrogate Charles Barron saying blacks should vote for the black candidate. Yes, just like the Michelle Obama and Rock statements this "happened" to come in November of 2007. Never forget the timeline. It was the Obamas who brought race into the campaign.

This is an extremely idiotic reason to vote for someone. Would you vote for Bush a third time, postulating that he could run again, if he were black? Think of what it would mean!

Again, I am content if it stays up. I'm kind of powerless against you folks who can use sophisticated terms like "identity politics."

OK, let me get this straight. Politics should reflect life, and everyone knows life is the same for everyone, regardless of identity. So identity politics is crass and silly. Is that your position? I don't want to be unfair.

We need to be cosmopolitan not nationalist, inclusive not exclusive, voting based on race or gender is a real step back-wards for the Democratic party and the ideals of the progressive movement.

We must keep our eyes on the prize and keep a Republican out of the WH.

I have a black son. So, I should vote Obama.

Some of my ancestors came from Africa, so I should vote Obama.

I am a woman with a daughter, so I should vote Hillary.

I share some French-Canadian ancestors with HRC, so I should vote for Hillary.

I have an insane Uncle, so I should vote McCain.

Decisions. Decisions.

And there is nothing to gain by ridiculing people who would proudly cast their vote for an African American just because his skin is black. He wouldn't be in the position he is in were he not well qualified. Can't you imagine the pride many people must feel? Besides, he's a lot better than McCain who, if pitted against Obama would undoubtedly get a lot of votes just because he is white.

racism. pure racism. it should not be about electing a black president or a white president. it should be about electing the president with the best policies. this is the problem, people voting for Obama cuz of his skin color. that is called RACISM. it is racism to elect a completely unqualified man because his skin color.

You seem in denial of how deeply ingrained white racism against blacks still is in America. It would do a world of wonderous good for black children to see a fine example of a black man who worked his way to the top. Maybe they'd actually believe the American dream really is open to them too.

56. I am voting for Obama because I think he is the best qualified
to lead and heal this nation.

But, if I felt he wasn't qualified and voted for him only because he's Black, what kind of an example would I set for my children? What message would they get?

Denial? Trust me, I've experienced white racism up close and personal. I can write a book about it. But, that has no bearing on my vote.
