20. Gallup Chart Showing Obama Momentum here

OBAMA MOMENTUM!

PRINCETON, NJ -- For several days, nationwide Democratic voters' preferences have been shifting toward Barack Obama in Gallup Poll Daily election tracking. Now, the Illinois senator enjoys his first statistically significant lead, 49% to 42%, over Hillary Clinton, according to the Feb. 13-15 results. Additionally, the 49% support for Obama represents the high point for him in the daily tracking program.

Obama has won the last eight Democratic primaries or caucuses, and hopes to make it 10 straight on Tuesday in Wisconsin and Hawaii. The tracking data reflect the Obama momentum since the Feb. 5 Super Tuesday primaries, moving from a +13 Clinton advantage in Feb. 3-5 polling to a +7 Obama lead in the latest results.

13. This is really quite extraordinary
This race has defied history in so many ways. No dominant frontrunner the way Senator Clinton was has ever won New Hampshire and then gone onto lose a national poll lead after that. Conversely, Obama's stunning win in Iowa should have given him a substantial New Hampshire victory. It didn't!

After Obama lost New Hampshire, Senator Clinton should have coasted to the nomination. I will never understand ever why President Clinton went nuclear in Nevada and South Carolina. She would have won Nevada and come close in S.C. if he had just kept quiet. His finger wagging red-faced fury at that Nevada reporter was the turning point when Senator Clinton lost the voice that New Hampshire had given her. Her husband stole it. Does anybody have any clue why?

Can you imagine if Clinton hadn't gone nuclear in Nevada or South Carolina and she had won the Nevada caucuses even with the powerful culinary union against her? Can you imagine if Bill hadn't said some of the stuff he did in South Carolina that so infuriated Senator Kennedy and helped lead to his endorsement of Obama, which was a critical turning point in this race. Again, I'm speehless. We can all agree she would have won Nevada without Bill's help right and she certainly wouldn't have lost 90% of the black vote if her husband had kept quiet in S.C.

What's even more remarkable is that Senator Clinton lead this race like 50-23 in December according to Gallup and she was one of the most formidable frontrunners of all time. Now, that has collapsed.

For political junkies, this race will need to be analyzed for a long time. Also, this is the 2nd cycle in a row now where the democratic frontrunner has run into such huge trouble once the actual voting starts,

14. I don't have a clue why Bill did what he did
but I'm glad he did. Although I'm not certain that that was the only thing that turned it around - some of the Mark Penn tricks didn't go over well, either. I think people are tired of Rovian type campaigns.

26. I agree. This is one of the most fascinating political primaries of a generation
The rise, the collapse, the drama in between. It is still playing out too. Who knows what will happen. But I still believe Obama can come through and pull off this monumental upset.

... for the TX & OH voters to jump off one bandwagon and onto another. I gotta believe that news coverage of polls like this would affect the Clinton leads in those states.

37. Big win v. small win
The nice thing for Obama is he doesn't need to win them, he just needs to keep it close. If Tx and Oh go 52/48 or 51/49 in favor of HRC it is a meaningless win for her, especially if Obama wins in Wisconsin and Hawaii and pads his lead. She must have at least 60/40 in both to stay in the race. I don't see it happening.

44. Yes, if Obama is within single digits across those 3 states (OH,TX,PA)...
... then it is a moral victory and effective delegate victory for him (and his campaign). If he also manages to win in any of those 3, then the nomination is sealed.

To make it a 49-49 tie when Bush was actually 2 points ahead in their real poll 48-46?

Sounds like a right wing conspiracy to me as well!!

Gallup is a fine polling company.

The trends are unmistakable. Hillary is losing momentum and Obama is gaining it.

45. Great post!
As an admitted political junkie, I am fascinated by the way this primary season is going. Before the voting started, Hillary Clinton was supposed to be unbeatable. Now, her campaign is struggling and has fallen behind the Obama campaign. Barack Obama has run one of the most impressive campaigns I have ever seen in my 36 years of voting.

I think the Democrats have their candidate and thank goodness it will be Barack Obama.

In every poll, he beasts John McCain, unlike Hillary Clinton who will have her ass handed to her in a race against McCain.
