Tabulated: The total nubmer of votes cast for each candidate thus far
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 01:36 PM by nomorewhopper
SCENARIO 1: If you include Florida, but not Michigan (where neither Edwards nor Obama were on the ballot) the numbers are as follows:

Obama: 9,853,299
Clinton: 9,431,319

Obama has 421,980 more votes cast for him.

SCENARIO 2: If you don't include Florida or Michigan, the numbers look like this:

Obama: 9,284,258
Clinton: 8,574,111

Obama has 710,147 more votes cast for him in this situation.

Notes:

I saw this number discussed on MTP on Sunday but could not find it online, so I added up the totals myself from the msnbc.com page here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21660914

SCENARIO 3: If you include both Michigan and Florida. Clinton received 328,151 votes in Michigan to the "Uncommitted" 237,762. Clinton, Kucinich, Dodd, and Gravel were on the Michigan ballots. If you add the 328,151 votes to Hillary's total and grant zero for Obama, Obama leads the total vote tally by 93,829.

I will attempt to update the numbers after Hawaii and Wisconsin.

edited to finalize some calculations and include the Michigan numbers

1. Thank You - please keep us posted with updates!
:hi:

More reason to assume the super delegates will follow the will of the voters.

2. Keep in mind the following

Some caucus states (IA and AK come to mind) do not tabulate voters totals.
Fewer people vote in caucus states, and Obama overwhelmingly took those, often by huge margins.
This implies that Obama's lead in the popular vote, even counting Florida and equating caucus and non-caucus states, is very impressive.

5. the caucus blowouts by obama have almost no impact on the total # of votes
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 01:42 PM by nomorewhopper
the numbers of "votes" accumulated in the caucuses are very, very small compared to the huge numbers of votes in states like virginia, ny, california, and new jersey.

my numbers show the votes cast, thus the huge caucus wins by obama have almost no impact on the overall numbers.

for example, from the msnbc page

CAUCUS (Idaho)
Obama: 16,880
Clinton: 3655

A huge win indeed, but his 75% landslide doesn't affect the totals nearly as much as the primaries. For example.

Primary (Virginia)
Obama: 623,141
Clinton: 347,252

Primary (New York)
Obama: 697,917
Clinton: 1,003,623

6. That was exactly my point

:hi:

Even though the popular vote totals give much greater weight to primary states, Obama is still leading by a clear margin.

11. Nonesense
They voted. They may not get delegates. But they voted. Why not count them? The popular vote has no particular meaning anyone. So what's the point of denying that these people voted??? Obama inspired spin. You want to be able to say. "Well we won the popular vote" "We're ahead in delegates" blah blah blah. But of course we don't count the good people of Flordida, because that would be bad for our side.

14. Because you don't know how many people didn't voted?
It's really pretty simple.

Many people didn't vote because they thought it wouldn't matter.

It's not Obama's fault that MI and FL screwed up.

7. And I got to Barack the vote early in the Texas primary today.
I we get to vote twice in Texas: I can still go to the caucuses on March 4, after the polls close, and vote there, too.
