KO Breaking news: McCain linked to lobbyist Vicki Iseman eight
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 07:59 PM by caligirl
years ago. KO says NY Times is saying this female lobbyist showed up at multiple functions and on his plane such that staffers tried to intervene. The lady looks a bit like his wife. McCain was warned by his staff he was risking his career and asked him to stop. He apparently refused. They met with the woman and asked her to stay away, she refused. McCain wrote some letters on her behalf to some government agency. This story was being talked about for weeks or months.

NYT

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/21/us/politics/21mccain.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, in his offices and aboard a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.

When news organizations reported that Mr. McCain had written letters to government regulators on behalf of the lobbyist’s clients, the former campaign associates said, some aides feared for a time that attention would fall on her involvement.

Mr. McCain, 71, and the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, 40, both say they never had a romantic relationship. But to his advisers, even the appearance of a close bond with a lobbyist whose clients often had business before the Senate committee Mr. McCain led threatened the story of redemption and rectitude that defined his political identity.

It had been just a decade since an official favor for a friend with regulatory problems had nearly ended Mr. McCain’s political career by ensnaring him in the Keating Five scandal. In the years that followed, he reinvented himself as the scourge of special interests, a crusader for stricter ethics and campaign finance rules, a man of honor chastened by a brush with shame.

But the concerns about Mr. McCain’s relationship with Ms. Iseman underscored an enduring paradox of his post-Keating career. Even as he has vowed to hold himself to the highest ethical standards, his confidence in his own integrity has sometimes seemed to blind him to potentially embarrassing conflicts of interest.

Mr. McCain promised, for example, never to fly directly from Washington to Phoenix, his hometown, to avoid the impression of self-interest because he sponsored a law that opened the route nearly a decade ago. But like other lawmakers, he often flew on the corporate jets of business executives seeking his support, including the media moguls Rupert Murdoch, Michael R. Bloomberg and Lowell W. Paxson, Ms. Iseman’s client. (Last year he voted to end the practice.)

42. It seems this may be more directed at the favors, sorry, he did for her firm, sorry,
he helped her in some way, but at this point its possible they got confirmation of a romantic nature or likely they would not have gone to press. They had this story during the NH primary and pulled it then. So what made them print it now. I guess it is someone had proof or confirmed the nature.

29. Good grief. Next time, try reading the article before you post,
In interviews, the two former associates said they joined in a series of confrontations with Mr. McCain, warning him that he was risking his campaign and career. Both said Mr. McCain acknowledged behaving inappropriately and pledged to keep his distance from Ms. Iseman. The two associates, who said they had become disillusioned with the senator, spoke independently of each other and provided details that were corroborated by others.

Separately, a top McCain aide met with Ms. Iseman at Union Station in Washington to ask her to stay away from the senator. John Weaver, a former top strategist and now an informal campaign adviser, said in an e-mail message that he arranged the meeting after “a discussion among the campaign leadership” about her.

... and the Republicans can only get Alan Keyes to run against Obama in the GE. :)

But I expect this story will quickly dissipate. Dirt seldom sticks to Republicans because Dems don't have the benefit of a persistent echo machine.

Does anyone know of this "Constuttion" to which they refer?

corroborate the story with multiple sources. Since sex is really what fuels these rumors it is likely the Times was able to confirm they were involved. Apparently this story was pulled in the past at the Times during the NH primary.

Buchannaon is saying the point is the charge of favors done by McCain for her firm.

NYT reminds all of Keating involvement of McCain in savings and loan scandal.

Assuming that this is a recent photo, she's what, 48 now? Not to sound like I'm endorsing marital infidelity or anything, but in fairness, the man IS human. I personally wouldn't whack him for it if he had a strictly personal indiscretion. Of course, I doubt that the right-wing is going to feel the same.

The marital infidelity isn't the big deal in this.

The big deal is that he was having an affair with a lobbyist, not an intern.

Was she exchanging sex for favors?

He didn't just cheat on his wife, he cheated on the American people, as Kos said.

57. My favorite bit in the article may be the McCain campaign's official response...
Mr. McCain’s presidential campaign issued the following statement Wednesday night:

“It is a shame that The New York Times has lowered its standards to engage in a hit-and-run smear campaign. John McCain has a 24-year record of serving our country with honor and integrity. He has never violated the public trust, never done favors for special interests or lobbyists, and he will not allow a smear campaign to distract from the issues at stake in this election.

“Americans are sick and tired of this kind of gutter politics, and there is nothing in this story to suggest that John McCain has ever violated the principles that have guided his career.”

So we're just supposed to ignore the Keating scandal as some sort of political mulligan? And I think the real problem for McCain, here, is that this story may remind voters of the "principles that have guided his career" -- traditional Republican cronyism.
