The Clinton Campaign I'd Like to Have Seen.

I was at my office yesterday and got a call from a Clinton staffer. She seemed very nice, and very polite, and we talked for a long time.

She asked me what I was most concerned about in the upcoming election, and I told her "ending the war, restoring fiscal sanity to our budget, including surpluses, and making sure that people understand the relationship between the war, our empire abroad and our debt..."

Well, okay, maybe that was what I said over a few Q & As, I'm hardly that succinct when I'm talking.

Anyway, she agreed with me, and we went down the list together, which was impressive (that she'd been taking notes).

After talking about this stuff, she (or I, maybe) reminisced about Bill's presidency. We talked about the Republican fiscal policy of running on the idea of conservative budgets while governing on credit. We talked about the origin of our national debt, the fact that the deficits grew under Reagan and grew under Bush I, and then shrank under Bill Clinton. Then she said, "It took a Clinton to clean up after the first Bush, it's going to take a Clinton to clean up after this one."

And I thought, what a great campaign message that would have been, if I'd ever heard it. Wouldn't it have been great if her campaign had emphasized restoring fiscal sanity, reducing our debt, restoring our economy and cutting back on our foreign adventurism?

I don't know. I know there's a health care "crisis" going on. But talk about universal health care and whose plan is better sounds a lot like promising me something. "Uncle Sam is gonna give you this here money."

And the truth is, I don't really need it. I don't need much in the way of gummint help, I work very hard and I do fine. And the gummit is going crazy-ass broke right now. Maybe if Uncle Sam had just won lotto I'd be more receptive about getting stuff from the gummint, but all I can think about is how my grandkids are going to have to pay all that money back someday, with interest.

Bill Clinton was fiscally responsible and in being so set the table for an economic period of prosperity when the poor saw their share of the pie increase while everyone's slice was getting bigger, too. He cleaned up the mess created by 12 years of Republican economic ignorance. I think Hillary could do the same thing, and I think with the recession starting to really bite people, maybe that's where she should have come from.

I didn't really see that campaign. I wish I would have. My vote isn't for sale, and I don't vote for the guy (or gal) who promises me the most goodies. I vote for the person I think is going to do the most for my country and my kids and their kids. I don't mind cutting back for the sake of my kids. I don't mind not getting anything personally from my tax "contribution".

I kinda mind when I'm treated like a child whose vote is for sale.

Anyway, for the gal who called me and shared such a nice conversation with me, thanks. I'm living in Texas, so I sorta think I'm gonna get a similar call from the Obama folks, and I hope it's just as nice.
